Which Messenger are you referring to? Facebook Messenger is a blue bubble with a lightning bolt in it. Samsung Messages is the stock text messaging app. There are hundreds of third-party apps in Google Play.
To answer your question the best I can, though, Messages (for texts) allows you to set a ringtone for each contact IN that contact's information... not the app itself. Messenger allows you to select a notification tone for the app - but I don't think each contact can be assigned their own sound because it's a Facebook app and I can't think of any easy way to assign a specific sound to every Facebook contact.
