I use ChompSMS. If the number is in my contacts ChompSMS displays the name of the contact. If the number is not in my contacts ChompSMS displays the number.
Are the messages in question from people listed in your contacts?
I've met this before: companies using some sort of SMS gateway to present just a name rather than a phone number. Quite likely it was sent from a computer rather than a mobile phone in this case.
Your carrier may be able to trace it further if you complain to them (certainly if the company is using a gateway on their network), but how much action they'll take is anyone's guess.
on computers, you can use a web service to send SMS texts out.
I do it a lot.
you are asked to enter your name and email address... ( email is bogus for me every time)
