Help Messenger: how can I see number message originated from?

JoeHPSDA

I've received a spam SMS. The sender is listed as a name, not a number.

I would like to know the number the message was sent from, but only a name is being displayed.

Is there any way to view the number using the default Android messenger app?

Thanks.

I use ChompSMS. If the number is in my contacts ChompSMS displays the name of the contact. If the number is not in my contacts ChompSMS displays the number.

Are the messages in question from people listed in your contacts?

I've met this before: companies using some sort of SMS gateway to present just a name rather than a phone number. Quite likely it was sent from a computer rather than a mobile phone in this case.

Your carrier may be able to trace it further if you complain to them (certainly if the company is using a gateway on their network), but how much action they'll take is anyone's guess.

on computers, you can use a web service to send SMS texts out.
I do it a lot.
you are asked to enter your name and email address... ( email is bogus for me every time)

the receiver sees only the name when it comes in

Yes, that seems to be the case.

I can forward spam SMS to my provider but they send an automated reply asking for the number of the sender - which I can't see.

Thanks.
