Messenger mark as read?

Hi! Just got my N6P a few days ago and I'm in love! But, I'm coming from a S4 and was using Chomp for SMS because of the quick reply. I like messenger ok, and the quick reply works great. What I need to know is: is there a way to mark messages as read from the notification shade? If I don't plan on replying I don't want to have to open the app and back out just to clear it. Is there a way to do this in Hangouts and is it better because I could try that.
 
why not just swipe away the notification?

it wont mark it as read, but it will no longer be in notifications.
 
I could do that. But then, eventually, I have to open the message for it to be marked as read. I guess I'm a little OCD but I can't have a message sitting as unread when I've read it. Lol
 
OMG I'm looking for the same thing. This would streamline my texting so much. I'm searching angie. Will get back to you if I find anything. I heard the handcent app did it but I think it was an older version. I'm gonna download it and try.
 
So handcent kinda works like this. When you read the message pop up and hit close it marks it as read automatically. The best I've come up with yet. And it seems like a stellar app. Lots of options have yet to go through it all. Hope this helps.
