metropcs converts from sms to mms

I just switched from verizon to metropcs and verizon gave a limited amount of charcters before it switched to mms when texting to an email address. Metropcs switches from sms to mms as soon as i put in the email address! Is there some kind of work around for this? Other then that i have liked the service
 
I have never tried to text a SMS to an email address, but that would be an app setting, not a MetroPCS side thing. I use a third party texting app and basically disabled the stock one.
