MetroPCS phone selction...is it really that bad?

metro has gotten dogged for its selection of phones for a while now but when you do some actual research and compare their phones to the phones of other prepaid services they're really pretty damn good, especially now.

verizon's prepaid selection is a joke. tracfone and page plus arent worth mentioning either.

tmobile's prepaid phones arent impressive at all until you get into sim cards. same can be said for straighttalk.

boost has the hydro and the evo design both with ICS which when compared to the LG motion get beat out in a lot of categories.

they're not really that much better than the connect or esteem either which are much older phones.

esteem

then there's virgin, metros only real competition as far as prepaids are concerned.

they have the evo v and one v which are both beasts and while the Lg motion is still good...

it doesnt match up with these phones. the connect and esteem dont stand a chance either. however, there's the fact that the motion costs much less than the evo v and one v and the evo v was a hand-me-down from sprint that discontinued it on their network. then there's virgin's super high-end acquisition of the iphone 4s but we know how thats been getting smacked around by the GS3 and will continue to once it hits metro stores. i hear people on virgin arent buying the 4s. not saying its true.

ting actually has a few high end phones with ICS but there all at least $500. they have the S2 in the middle with 2.3 gingerbread thats about the cost of the lightray. below that are phones that the esteem, connect and motion all beat that are in the $200 or less range.

gingerbread is on almost all prepaid offerings from all prepaid companies and other prepaid companies ICS phones are in the $300 range or more.

metro can do a lot better, and they are indeed working on it, but they are far from the phone slouch they are portrayed to be.

i will say again that metro could put a SERIOUS dent in the game if they had a BYOD program. a legit one where you can FULLY flash.

Now that you speak of that... don't you think that while the sgs3 is a great phone, metros' service could hinder the phones overall network performance. I'm not so sure if saving for it would help my conscious decision...

i was solely keeping everything to just phone selection in this thread but if you want to talk about the quality of their mobile data i'd say they're still pretty damn good compared to other prepaids that either arent as fast as metro or limit their service.

i also didnt mention that many of the phones on other prepaid networks arent 4G capable.

virgin and boost only have one 4G phone each.

well said but in my experience of checking out metro in the past the first thing that came to my mind were the phones are over priced.i would never pay 379 and 459 for a single core phone.i also kind of remember the connect being near $400 when it launched but i could be wrong about that.with that said i think the motion is a great deal. i know they priced it that cheap to get more people to switch to lte and to be honest with out the motion i probably would of never came to metro.

the connect was $350 when it debuted. came down $50 like a week after bought it(day of). sucked for me.

the esteem was $300 for a long time and then it just shot up like 3 months ago while the connect and attain went down considerably.

back when metro was the first company to have 4G and put out the first 4G phone they didnt have any real competition in the prepaid market. the esteem was a hell of a phone for any prepaid carrier. they followed that up with the attain and the connect 4 months later all debuting between $300-$400.

virgin mobile started making moves and got the evo v, one v, and the iphone. the V phones debuted at a cheaper price and were better phones(thanks sprint). metro now had real competition and needed to reduce the prices of their phones and come out with new ones. the connect went down in price and so did the attain(did anyone actually buy that phone?)

we have virgin to thank for pushing metro to step up their game and come out with more and better 4G phones. they're stepping up to the plate with better and less expensive phones and new price plans.

i would of just stuck with vm and my evo if my data speeds didnt pretty much die.sprint towers are just way to congested where i live.i even thought about buying another nexus and going back to t mobile but then i found out about the motion and that metro has lte where im at.im glad they are releasing better priced phones since i actually would like to stick with them for a while at least until i find out if my local carrier will keep data unlimited when they get lte and hspa+ late next year.

I think it's good that they are finally getting some competition from other prepaid carriers with the handset lineup. It could only mean bigger and better things.

One other why I stay with metro is that I get unlimited data at a decent speed without throttling and without a contract . The only other carrier to do that is sprint and it would cost at least 100 a month and though all these phones are technically better than the esterm, they're worthless to me without unlimited data.

I don't know if this will matter but I gotten better 3G network speeds thought my Metro. Then my buddy has in the same exact location with Sprits 4G service. I think network speed is more a mix of location and carrier network. I bet the bottom line is most carriers now day's share towers with each other. There are only so many locations to build towers. Plus dont most carriers share there towers with each other (lease).
