MetroPCS will cancel LG Motion service. Which phone to now get ?

I like MetroPCS, but just found out that they will terminate CDMA service soon, ending my use of the LG Motion. I love my LG Motion. Which phone is a great replacement ? Heard about the LG Optimus (8 GB internal RAM) and the Samsung Avant (16 GB internal RAM).

The Motion has been great in part because of the 3600 mAH extended batteries which are available for less than $10 each.

Which MetroPCS phone replacement for the LG Motion do you recommend which will be the same or better and have an extended replaceable battery available ?

The 8 or 16 Gig isn't RAM; it's storage. I'm not positive, but it's probably only 1 or 1.5 Gig of RAM. Now, however, as far as Metro branded phones go, I think that the Avant or LG F60 would probably be the better and fairly inexpensive phones that they have. There are even more inexpensive phones, but not good ones. If you want a Metro branded one that is. If you are willing to pay around $200 or so, I'd go with a SIM unlocked phone and do the BYOD thing. I'm using a Motorola Moto G (1st generation 3G version) and love it. The 2nd generation is a good phone as well as many other brands. If you go SIM unlocked, you don't have to worry about getting a new phone if you decided to jump ship and go with a different provider.

Thank you. I meant "storage", not RAM. My boo-boo. So the Avant or LG F60 is better than the LG Motion ?

If a phone call to Metro will unlock my Motion, then why doesn't everyone get their phone unlocked ? Is there a downside to unlocking the phone ?

The Motion can't be unlocked. It's a CDMA phone. SIM unlocked is for GSM phones (phones that work on AT & T, T-Mobile, etc).

The two phones I mentioned are better than the Motion; newer, better processor, bigger screens. I'd buy one of them if I hasn't decided to go the unlocked BYOD route. I don't think I'll ever go with a branded phone again.

Thank you. Just found out that MetroPCS no longer offers the Family Plan for 4G LTE. BUT another major carrier does ! 4 lines $100 and LTE data LTE speeds until 2.5GB each line.

Unlocked BYOD ?

Uh? They still offer Family Plan, you will get $10 discount on the second line (or $5 discount on each line.)
Check this link, it clearly says Family Plan ---- https://www.metropcs.com/cell-plans.html

If you don't use much and you need multiple lines then, 4 lines for $100 from other carrier maybe cheaper option.

Another carrier offers four lines for $100, five lines for $125, and the data is 4G LTE speed until 2.5 GB on each line. Sounds good.

If you're looking to switch, Cricket currently offers 5 lines for $100 with 2.5GB per line.

If you decide to switch to them (or the other carrier) make sure they have good coverage first :)

Which carrier would this be? Kate pointed out the Cricket deal and TMobile's deal, although similar, is $110 for 5 lines. Sprint is currently $90 for 5 lines with a 12GB cap and that plan is locked in at that price for a year.

Its tmobile. There simple choice family plan is 4 for 100 10 gb limit. Or 2.5 per line. Not really a different carrier.

Correct. So T-mobile is offering a better deal than MetroPCS. T-mobile is a lower price and allows 2.5 GB data per line. N/o contract. Metro's family plan is only for 4G phones, not 4G LTE.

T-mobile also offers one router and one signal booster.

Surprised that MetroPCS doesn't beat T-mobile.

The LG F60 has been referred to on this board as the spiritual successor to the LG Motion. In my opinion, that is a very apt description.

I can't compare the F60 to the Avant since I don't have the Avant but I do have the F60. I loved the Motion so much and I'm very happy with the upgrade to the F60. I know the Avant has a lot more storage capacity than the F60 but now that the F60 is rooted you can move more apps to the SD card.

I say if you loved the Motion you will feel right at home with the F60. Its like a Motion with a bigger screen.

With less memory unfortunately, thats part of what made that little Motion a favorite amongst many was its more generous on board memory!

For family plans it usually is cheaper to go thru the carriers themselves and not there prepaid options. Even Verizon and att offer heavy discounts on multiple line accounts. With prepaid there are a few decent deals like the cricket deal. As far as the avant vs f60 the avant is the better phone but its also twice as much. More ram more storage just better looking and feeling than the f60. Screen wise its a sharper display on the avant but I'd say the f60 display may look a little better because its an IPS display compared to the avants TFT panel. But the avant to me just runs better. Camera wise there about equal. Only difference is the avant only shoots video in 720p where the f60 will do 1080p. Neither camera is overly great though. If your on a tight budget the f60 is fine but if you can afford the extra for the avant the extra storage and ram is worth it. The f60 may be 8gb but only about 3.9 of that is usable out of the box.

I don't root my phones. The one which has the better extended battery available would win. Avant has how much usable storage out of the box ?

Does Metro carry WiFi boosters and signal boosters, or one buys them from Tmobile to use with Metro ?

The Avant has 16GB of storage, of which 11GB is actually available from new. Same as the S5 and far more than the F60.
Don't know about extended batteries but the OEM one is 2800ma which is decent. Battery life is ok especially if you do the right tweaks.
If my Avant hadn't had a problem I'd still be using it, it's a good phone for the money as long as you don't need a killer display.
I believe Metro has cell extenders available, look around on their site. WiFi would be on you since Metro doesn't provide that.

Metro doesnt offer cell extenders thats a tmobile only thing. Another thing is the avant is band 12 lte capable and the f60 is not. Not really a huge deal now but can be in the future once they get band 12 all rolled out. You should notice alot better indoor lte signal once they do.

The WiFi to which I was referring is the ASUS® device attached to the users WiFi router.

Need to look for an extended battery.

Is tethering available on the Avant, and if so, is it unlimited on the unlimited data plan ?

Well they do mention boosters here, although it looks like that page hasn't been updated in a while and it doesn't actually say anything about how to get one-
https://www.metropcs.com/support/signal-booster/signal-booster.html
Most of the current Metro phones, including the Avant, officially support tethering. If you read the FAQ's you'll see that on the unlimited plan adding the hotspot only give you 2.5GB for tethering, for more you have to pay extra.
