MicroSD Expeiences, Both Good & Bad

PotMonster

Newbie
I have had no experience with these cards and recently purchased a 32GB GSkill MicroSDHC c10 w/ adapter for $27. After reading some reviews of MicroSD cards in GENERAL, I've seen some horror stories. I was wondering what your experiences are with ANY BRAND, both good and bad, so I know what to expect. I've read that ppl received cards that don't even work out of the box and some ppl say theirs conked out within a few months.

My biggest problem with MicroSD cards has been losing the little buggers. They are particularly hard to find when dropped on a gray and black rug. Aside from that I've haven't had any issues with the micro brands. I tend to stick to San Disk because I had good experiences with there CF cards. Their SD cards on the other hand were always conking out on me. That's the original large SD cards not the mini or micro variants that followed.

This is interesting because I was searching for an SD Card speed topic as I was curious to know whether the Ultra High Speed SD card that I bought was worth the money or whether I wouldnt get any higher speeds than Class 10.

Now that I've stumbled on this topic it will make me want to test it each week to determine whether any corruption has occurred or loss of speed or data. I've only had it since April the 4th so far and nothing wrong has happened but I will report back here if I do find something I dont like regarding the SD card.

I tested the speed with the program Android Tuner and I'm happy with the results. The first picture is the Android internal SD card speed with associated cache sizes and the 2nd picture is the Ultra High Speed external SD card with associated cache sizes.

If anyone knows of any SD card speed topics it would be good for me to have the link, as the forum search feature doesn't let you include the letters "SD" together because it says they're too commonly mentioned.

*Duplicate of a post I made before*

I've just used it to restore system backup and ive restored at least 4 times already so there has been some reading and writing access with some large file sizes, but not sustained reading and writing access like listening to MP3's or watching videos.

So far it seems good, and I'm looking to take advantage of the read speeds of the card by installing an internal2external sd mod, so then there will be more sustained reading and writing on the card. I always use the "cache to sd card" option in Dolphin Browser.

That's funny because I happened to check my speeds also and took a screenshot, like 15 min after I made this thread, lol, here are my results, not too shabby imo.

Nice scores. I decided to use the same benchmark program to test my SD card but they didn't stay consistent.

I have a Sandisk 32GB microSD card, and never even bothered to check the read rate..all i know is that when i tried transferring nearly 1,000 songs from my laptop onto it, somehow only around 960 made it across...and it's a huge hassle to scroll through my entire library to see which songs i'm now missing on my phone. Ugh.

@SkyJackpot
I've tested mine about 3/4 times now and all have very consistent, off by 1 or 2mb, but then again, it's brand spankin' new, we'll see in a few months.

I moved about 4GB of music from my laptop to phone w/o a glitch a few days back.

I reduced the swap file down from 256 MB to 8 MB and tested it again but it's still not consistent, but the speed seems to be getting higher when I keep retesting it. I've got 8 programs open this time when before I had none open.

A test I done one after the other with the reduced swap file

Some quick thoughts:

In my experience with phones and MicroSD cards, class 10 made no difference vs a class 6 or class 4 card. YMMV.

2GB cards are virtually useless. My old phone (HTC EVO 4g) did not like them at all.

Micro SD cards can fail over time. I had a Kingston 16 gb class 6 in my Nook Color and it failed after a year. I had the same type of card in my old EVO Shift and it worked perfectly. YMMV.

Newegg and 1SaleADay are the places I found good deals on Micro SD cards

This is true. SanDisk is obviously the gold standard but like any cards, can fail too.

It's been around a month and a half since I first purchased this SD card and an update on the data integrity and any speed loss so far is nonexistent. It has been a great performerd.

I also wanted to test the zooming functionality on some 70 Megapixel and below pictures as somebody did have an issue with their pictures not zooming at one point, but like many problems, many are one offs which the huge majority just don't encounter at all.
