.mkv to DVD tried 99 junk programs already that didn't work, or burned the DVD in 30sec, AKA a coaster.

Id be happy if I could just turn it into a iso, don't have to go right to dvd.

any tips ???

The .mkv filename extension is used by the Matroska container, although there's no guarantee that all files with a .mkv extension are Matroska files.

The first thing you need to do is find out what is inside of the Matroska container, if that is in fact what it is. If it contains .VOB, .BPU and other files copied directly from a DVD, those files can be used with a DVD burning program to create a UDF filesystem, create the correct directory structure and fill the directory or directories as it was with the original DVD.

If it contains MPEG transport streams, or some other codec type, the video must be converted to the appropriate format by using DVD authoring software to (transcode and) package the video into the video and file standards that DVD players understand.

Few sites said a mkv would play raw on a xbox 360 but didn't have any luck, and what im trying to do.

take a mini movie I got on my tablet and play it on the TV via the xbox.
[7in screen ins't fun for 4 to watch]

might just upload it to youtube on private channel, xbox has youtube.

Is it just one particular mkv that your xbox is having problems playing, or all of the mkvs you've tried? Or have you only tried the one?

this is the first time Ive come across a mkv file, it does play fine on the PC with VLC

I hope mkv doesn't catch one if its gonna be a pita ;)

uploading to youtube right now, Ill then use tubemate to grab a copy in flv mpg format as a back up, those can go on DVD easy.......

MKV is commonly used for movies and TV shows here in China. AFAICT it's generally H264, DivX or Xvid video with an MP3 or AAC soundtrack, occasionally 2-3 soundtracks in various languages, and there's often embedded subtitles as well. I've not tried burning DVDs from them, as I don't have a DVD burner. But they always play just fine on my PC with VLC, and my Android phones and tablet as well.

Many people download MKVs in internet bars, and copy them to USB drives or their Android phones and tablets. Also most modern TVs, STBs, even car systems that are available here have USB, and can play MKV video.

BTW a friend gave me the entire The Walking Dead, with a choice of English or Chinese subtitles, and that's in MKV. I gave him the entire Mr. Bean in return. :D
