MMS without expensive data charges?

Mr User

I currently have an old Tmobile family plan, unlimited texting including MMS, no data.
I've had to live without MMS for a while now, because my phone needed data to send/receive MMS but uses a huge amount data any time there's no wifi that incurred way too much charges. Then my Android phone got broken, replaced with a normal phone anyways so I didn't mind MMS.

But now I'm planning to grab a Nexus 5 soon after its imminent release, and would like to use all features of the plan we pay for, specifically MMS.

I believe blocking internet data but allowing MMS is possible via editing APN profiles, but have no idea how to do this.
Can someone shed a light on this?
Thank you

Can't answer your actual question. But I was you last year. grandfathered into an older t-mobile family plan with unlimited text/MMS, x amount of minutes and no data.

My daughter was on Gingerbread and I was on Jelly Bean. Somehow, someway she was able to receive MMS with mobile data off and I was not (the way GB and JB handle MMS etc.) It was a pain as people had to text me and say "turn on your mobile data". Then I would leave it on until the MMS was received and turn it off once it arrived. Meanwhile, leaving mobile data on while at home or work on wifi was never an issue.

My recommendation (in lieu of answering your question) is to look at the current family plans. There are a lot that have mobile data that are not that expensive compared to the older ones.

For my daughter and I, I actually saved a few dollar a month and got the $30/month 100 minutes, unlimited text and unlimited data (4gb at high speed) for each of us. Yes, the 100 minute thing is a pain, but there are ways around that.

Yea I actually looked into a cheaper, new plan (110 bucks for 5 people, unlimited everything, 500 Mb before throttling) and is actually cheaper than our current plan (128 bucks a month) but thing is my parents are so hard to convinve to change plans. IDK why, maybe they don't know much about mobile stuffs and don't want to deal with Tmo reps. I'll try, but knowing how to enable MMS without incurring data would still be great to limit data use when I don't have WiFi, even with data allowance.

90% sure that post GB you have to have mobile data enabled to receive an MMS.

You could tell a little white lie and say that t-mobile is moving people to newer plans and so you should switch before forced.

Well, not sure about how your network sets it up, but with me, there are 2 APN's on my phone, one for MMS and one for data. If it's the same in your case, just delete the data APN and leave the MMS APN alone.

You mean me? Well I. I'm not in the US, plus it depends on your carrier. If your carrier uses the same APN for data and MMS, no amount of edit can change that AFAIK.

ahh I see. I'm planning to but the Nexus 5, unlocked, and installing a T-mobile SIM. Are APN profiles automatically generated once the SIM card is inside? If it is so I might be able to figure out which APN is the mms and which is internet.

In my case they are automatically added. Then when I go to the APN settings one is labeled Globe Internet and another is Globe MMS, Globe being my carrier.
