Mobile # calls go to Google Voice, but don't ring on device.

Currently, when I get a phone call on my mobile number and don't answer (or busy) it forwards to my google voice number, which goes straight to voicemail.

Normally, this makes sense. I just failed to answer the call, so why ring the phone again?

However, I'm out of the country and only have WiFi access, so in this case it would be great.

Also, before google broke Groove IP, it was great. If I didn't answer a call then my tablet would ring and I could answer there. Is there any way to set that up again?

This was really useful when I would misplace my phone or leave it somewhere, and it would be great to be able to do that again now that I have no mobile network to access.

GrooveIP isn't actually broken - they've partnered with a VoIP service (ring.to) to still be able to provide free calls, and it can still integrate with Google Voice. The major difference is that you have to add your new ring.to phone number as a forwarding number in Google Voice (instead of just forwarding to Google Talk).

I haven't used it, but I've seen a lot of positive response to this solution. :thumbup:

As to the first part of my question, I think I can state it more plainly:

I'd like my GV# to ring on my mobile phone /before/ going to VM.

That's pretty much it.

Currently, if I don't answer my mobile number it does forward to my GV#, but the GV# goes straight to VM.

(I'm out of the country and I have no mobile plan, only wifi.)
 
Unfortunately, no.

My number is listed there as a forwarding number.

I can understand why it does not work: calls from my carrier are forwarded to gv on no answer/busy, so why would I normally want GV to attempt to ring my phone again after I just failed to answer or it was busy?

However, it would be nice if there were a workaround.
 
Hmm.

I don't have that handy conditional call forwarding (T-Mobile prepaid); incoming calls to my GV number ring my mobile number before falling back to the GV voicemail.

I wonder if it would work if you temporarily broke the conditional call forwarding on your mobile number.

Phone > Settings > Voicemail > Service: My Carrier (instead of Google Voice)

Might be worth a shot.

The problem is that GV will not route a call to any mobile device /at this time/.

I knew that it would not work on my WiFi only tablet, but stupidly I did not realize that my phone is basically the same animal, mobile plan or no.

There is currently a workaround for placing calls, but I'm not interested in that. I can use the lappy and G-Mail for that.

The solution that codesplice suggested for using Groove IP may work for placing calls, and I may test it, but probably not. (I'm on vaycay ;)) I understand that calling via GV is coming to hangouts, so I'll probably just wait for that. I don't want to sign up for yet-another-web-service anyway, free or no.

For now I'm fine with getting my VMs over WiFi and calling with lappy as needed and when convenient.
 
That's really odd that calls to your GV number don't ring the mobile number you have configured in Google Voice - that's kind of the primary purpose of Google Voice. And I don't see how Verizon could block that.

I'd suggest removing all numbers from your GV configuration and readding from scratch. Also try disabling the forwarding of calls to Google Talk / Google Chat / Hangouts / Google Whatever-it-will-be-called-next-week, so that GV *only* forwards to your mobile number.

See my post above again. I've edited it to be more accurate. It's not Verizon blocking it, but instead it's that GV place/receive calls is not yet implemented in Hangouts.

It will work for a WinOS PC and (presumably) a Mac or Linux PC, but not an ARM mobile device.

TBH, I don't think calls to my GV number should ring my mobile #, but that's irrelevant in this case, since I don't give out my GV#, and so no one would call it directly.

Thanks for the response, but I'm pretty sure that at this time no one can take or make a GV call over WiFi with an ARM/Linux mobile device on stock Android.
 
Oh, sorry, I read the bit about "GV will not route a call to any mobile device" as if you were referring to POTS rather than VoIP. You can safely disregard all of my last post. :D

From the VoIP standpoint you are absolutely correct: there is currently no _native_ solution for making or receiving VoIP-based Google Voice calls on Android. Hangouts for iOS supports it; hopefully the Android version will get that capability soon.
