mobile data on for MMS pics?

I had a nokia E7 (and other nokia phones) before my galaxy relay 4g. before I never needed to have mobile data on to receive pic attachments. now with this new phone it has to be on, and takes from my data instead.

anyone else experienced this? wasn't expecting it thought everything SMS related was separate?
 
Text messaging or SMS uses your network connection (the same connection that you use to make a phone call).

Picture messaging or MMS uses your data connection (the same connection that you use to connect to the Internet).

It's possible to send picture messages using wi-fi. Could it be that you were connected to a wi-fi device and just didn't realize it when you sent picture messages on your other phone?

Don't know about you, but connecting to and disconnecting from wi-fi isn't a major event in my life, so I don't always keep track.

Just one possible explanation.
 
With phones that aren't 3g text and MMS are sent through the same network.
3g changed that, with 3g I believe the attachments you can send are bigger.
 
Nokia phones had data connection on "turn on when needed" by default. So it turns it on quickly and then off immediately when receiving an MMS.

This can't be done nowadays because there are several apps asking for internet connection so it will always be on anyway, unless manually set off.
 
just wanted to give an update that I got it figured out

From the beginning I started with a Sony Ericsson W580. Then I got a Nokia 5800 and moved the sim card into it. I still wasn't being charged for MMS pics. Then I got a Nokia N97 and did the same thing, no charge. Then I got a Nokia E7 and did the same, still no charge

Now with my Android-based phone (Galaxy S Relay), it came locked to T-Mobile and I have AT&T. During the unlocking my phone was registered as a smart phone.

See what happened was the W580 apparently wasn't considered a "smart phone" and I had been using that SIM on all my Nokia phones, getting MMS pics for free.

now that its registered as a smart phone mobile data has to be on to get MMS pics, no way around it.

just wanted to share this in case anyone else runs into the same thing
