I've looked into this also as a new to Android D2G owner. Changing the bar looks to be beyond the standard rooting procedure and gets into the flashing and custom rom arena. This employs the likes of Droidmod and should be preceded by a backup (Nandroid). Once completed you can replace any number of elements including the noti-bar with custom themes.
Of coarse your model of phone, android version, level of experience and tolerance for risk of bricking your phone will factor in. I am probably going to wait until the D2G gets proven custom roms and good how-tos on loading and recovery to stock.
