I really have to laugh now. 'Bout a month ago I went from a really vanilla flip phone that I used for nothing but talk, a Motorola, just as thin, an inch shorter and just as nice looking as the Incred I've been toting around for a while now.

But before I got the smarts (pardon the really bad pun) I used to people watch in restaurants, from hot dog stands to five star restaurants and I see a whole new phenomena...people staring blindly, as tho transfixed, on something they're holding in their hand.

I was laughing because people usually go out to interact with people instead of playing some tiny computer game on a two inch screen or whatever they're doing.

Now, I have joined the cult of down-starers. I'm trying to determing the long term effects of keeping my neck bent down to look at and play with this truly amazing toy. But I fear all us Droiders will, by the time we're in our 80s and 90s have a syndrome diagnosed decades previously as Droidus Stennosis. People might say "poor folks", but we'll say, hell, we're automatically in position to Droid. :)

I know that feeling, of being surrounded by "down-starers" who are, apparently, busy being somehow more social than those of us giving our full attention to the people we are together with in real life. Modern times, eh? :o

Incidentally, your wording of seemingly absent-minded stares reminds me of the book "Beautiful Red" by Darusha Wehm -- you ain't seen nothing yet, after all we're still lugging around external devices to do our interaction. Pfft! :rolleyes:
 
Funny post and Oh so true.

I see people do this every day in the train every day, but in a crowded train, it is expected. The funny thing is that I also see it in the park, where you would expect folks to be chatting or engaging in other activities. instead I see them sitting around with all manner of electronic devices, staring blindly into a screen, while the squirrels enjoy the park without humans bothering them.

The oddest one I've seen was the other night. My wife and I were out to dinner a a little cafe. in come these two guys in their 20's dressed for a night on the town. They site down, talk up the waiter, laugh a little and order. the waiter comes out with the wine, the thank him and then they each whip out a smart phone, set it on the table and look down. they proceed to do this without even acknowledging that there is someone else at the table for the next 25 minutes. All I could think about was that somehow, nights out on the town don't seem as entertaining as they used to be in pre-smartphone days.

I did get yelled at by a security guard the other day though. I was walking to the train with my nose in a book - the book being a download on my screen. As I passed the security guard he made it a point to say that I shouldn't be "texting" while walking as I was bound to get run-over. Maybe someone should invent a proximity sensor app so you can detect solid object near you if you are distracted with the phone while walking. something like a car's proximity back up alarm to warn you to look up. :D
 
You know, I saw some kind of reader (texting? ebook? can't recall) that featured a transparent background, courtesy of the camera. :p Fun idea, but I don't think I could stand reading anything like that.
