Root moto defy cyanogenmod 7 radio/baseband?

I rooted and installed cm7 on a friends phone. It worked fine for afew hours but then the radio or baseband whatever its call stopped working so he cant make or receive calls or txts or browse the web. So i tried a different rom and the same thing happend. What can i do to fix it any help is appreciated. Thx

I know in my version CM7.2 there is baseband selector in settings > device settings.
