Try the Moto E4 Plus (NOT Verizon Wireless tho), there is Root, TWRP, ROMs for it (some I've made myself).. Plus it has a 5000mah battery to last ya days.. I get 3days on a single charge with light-moderate use

Here's a nice back-to-back comparison:

These are just hardware specs of course but if you look at each category and take into consideration how each relates to your own smartphone needs or wants one by one than it might help you decide which is better for you. Right from the start the Moto G does have a CPU/GPU and a higher res display so since you mentioned gaming as a priority that's a notable thing, that's obviously not an E4 strong point. But the Moto E4 includes USB OTG support so if USB peripherals are a factor there's that to consider. The E4 also has a user-removable battery, the G does not. And I don't know if the G does or does not but, the E4 (unlocked version) supports both portable and adoptable for the microSD card so as far as overall storage issues that's another thing to consider. Regarding the alleged G heat issues, if that's a prevalent issue I'd imagine there would have been a lot of media coverage on that. If you're basing your opinion on, as an example, a handful of users complaining on some online forum, it is important to keep in mind there isn't a single model in existence that can be 100% trouble-free so if that's what you're looking for, especially when it involves lower-end, budget phones, that's not a reality.
Offhand I think the Moto G Turbo would be better if gaming is indeed the most important thing, but the Moto E4 is a better, every day usage choice.

I'm thinking of playing with/adding some OC to the kernel but @1.4Ghz in stock, there isn't much needed.. Already fast
