Moto X Sales

A Wall Street Journal article recently said that they are saying the Moto X is estimated to have sold around 500,000 devices in Q3 when the phone was released in August. T

Ouch. They do predict I think that those sales could double in Q4.

Also since Google has owned Motorola, they have lost around you know, 250 million dollars from the Moto division.

The future of this relationship is foggy! I don't know if making an amazing phone is really top of the list of their priorities.

I still think the Moto X is the best phone in production.

There are hardly if any bugs with the Phone because it doesn't have bleeding edge specs that can cause issues. it is just a very well built phone.

I've been seeing commercials for it a lot lately, they are finally starting to push it.

The release was a blunder IMO. AT&T exclusive for MotoMaker, that had to impact overall sales (and drive some to other phones).

Now that the price has been lowered, it's available everywhere, advertising has kicked in and Christmas is coming I think sales will pick up. It truly is an amazing phone.

I wish i would have waited now that the price is coming down and moto maker is here. but at the same time. I would rather have my moto x now than to keep holding onto that droid dna

If some people consider 500,000 a good number, its sad that they messed up the launch so bad.

Also, I worry because it seems Google strategy is to enter the smartphone market with the low cost strategy. Trying to find ways to make it easier for people to be "online" and using the Google experience. Which for them equals $$$$.

I didn't care about MotoMaker really but did want 32GB and no contract. So, when the developer edition came for Verizon I jumped on it. Retail price hardly ever drops, but it did. It would have been nice to save $100 by waiting but I don't regret getting it at all.

To get those 10 million unit volumes, Samsung and Apple start stockpiling inventory 6-8 months in advance of the release date.

No one at Google/Motorola expected to sell millions of units in the first quarter. If they had, they wouldn't be pushing customization, they wouldn't be making them in the old Nokia factory in Ft Worth, and they wouldn't be making them "on demand" and shipping them to directly to the customer.

I would imagine that the Moto X isn't meeting Google/Motorola's internal, best-case projections; but I bet they aren't that far off either given the system the company implemented to design, assemble, and ship the phone. Given that MotoMaker is just now rolling out on other carriers, I doubt Googerola is that panicked about sales numbers.

IF I had one regret (IF) it would be that the engraving is now back online, I'd have liked to have that option. Plus I am sure they will be adding new colors and the wood options soon. Overall though I LOVE LOVE LOVE this phone. Far and away the best phone I've ever had.

I have a Droid Maxx, not an X, but I don't regret a penny of the price I paid. It's a fatastic phone - the best available for me. The only other phone I would have considered is the X.

I take these stories with a grain of salt. Who knows if Samsung was counting shipments of phones into store inventories, rather than to consumers, in that ten million? To be honest, when the S4 was released, I remember reading similar stories that sales were weaker than expected.

This is one analyst estimating sales, based on who knows what? All I hope is that Motorola sells enough to justify staying in the phone business, because, if this is the direction of Motorola going forward, I really, really like where they are going, and I'm not too sure I like where Samsung is going.

As of right now there is Samsung and then everyone else (in the Android universe). Samsung easily takes over %50 of the share while every other OEM is pretty much in a dead even race. LG, HTC, Sony, Moto. Probably give the lead to HTC at the moment.

What did every OEM try to do? Make a high end, top of line smartphone. Because that's what Samsung did to propel them to the top. It worked for me. I got the S3 because of the reviews I read about the S2.

I think we see Googerola trying the first stage of breaking into a new market, trying to distance themselves from the current group they are placed in, and take over a commanding number two role? Entering a market with a low cost strategy is a classic method of getting your name known. It just seems logical to me with the pricing of the Moto X, the release of the Moto G, and the off contract price may be a little high, but its still cheaper then its competition. You can't beat Samsung overnight, but at least distance yourself from the others.

250 million is a drop in the bucket for Google. Honestly this is going the way google does everything else..... quietly. One day in the near future you are going to look around and see a Moto product everywhere and wonder "Now when did that happen?".

I will say this, I still look at Sunday ads in the paper and there were NO retailers including Bestbuy giving the phone any love. None of the ads featured or contained any Motorola phones.....

Just a minor point but Q3 ended Oct 1, and the Moto X went on sale August 23, 2013 on ATT, 29th in VZW, and a bit later from Moto directly, then the dev phones. VZW also did not carry it in store for the first week or two, you had to get it delivered.

So That 500K looks pretty good, not great, but good.

IMHO, one of the things that hurt the X so much was how haphazard the launch was and the ATT exclusive Moto Maker nonsense. (Also release so close to the N5).

If they had released in June on all carriers with Moto Maker, they would have done VERY well.

Exactly. I think the Moto X has done exceedingly well taking into consideration all of those things.

Now that we're entering the holiday season, and all the carriers have moto maker access, I think the Moto X is gonna take off for sure.

I hope so, because I'm honestly a bit sick of phablets :)

I want the manufacturers to get the message "specs+more != better".

And honestly the way I see it, the X is definitely one of the top phones out there now. The way it wakes up when it comes out of my pocket is so incredibly useful -- that alone is something I will miss when I try out my N5.

I do have one friend who was waiting for moto maker to come out on VZW, and it's only $150 (100+50 for MM). So hopefully there are a lot more like her.
