Move photos to ext sd card failed

[Android Question]

I selected 30 small photos and went to move them to ext sd card, as I've done before. Unfortunately, the ext sd card was not in place in the phone at the time. Now the photos are not showing in the original sd location. Any recovery possible? Any recommended apps?
Thanks a lot. The photos are of my mother-in-law-to-be (?) at her 75th birthday party.
