I use MX Player to play my movies that I compressed down to a manageable size with Handbrake on my PC.
Generally, you want to lower the file size since you can't appreciate the full scale version on your phone, and I have had phones struggle with too large of a file size (must be at least below 4GB per file size since many storage SD cards are using FAT32)
