Android Question

Sorry, I know very little about android.

I want to increase the avaiable memory on my 7 year old sons generic 8 GB Android (4.4.2) tablet (kernal v3.4.39). I've added a 32GB SD card, which I can see (as 29.82 GB) in settings - storage, which is shown as empty. I've tried moving an app (Sim City) to SD card. That app then showed 56 KB on the SD and offered me the option to move it to tablet, but 56KB moved is nothing, and settings - storage still showed the SD card as empty with 29.82 GB available. Oddly there was already an app that said it was in SD, and must have been so before I added the SD card.

Theres something on Tom's Guide about How to Set the Default Download Location to an SD Card, which says "tap the app drawer icon from the home screen.", and then "From the displayed list, tap on the My files icon." But as I can't see a "My files icon" anywhere, that's a bust.

I've also seen a YouTube vid about editing the root (?) to make the SD card replace the internal memory, but the warnings about this stopping it from ever working again, stopped me from trying this. Anyway, I presume if you do that, and then take the SD card out, odd things happen to the available memory, so I'd rather not.

Any advice on how to do this so a 7 year old can still use it afterwards?
