Help Moving messages to a different folder in gmail doesn't remove them from inbox

At one point, I think moving messages or changing labels would remove them from the inbox. Now I have to archive them in a separate step. I want to change the label in one step.

Has gmail's behavior changed? It is there a setting I accidentally changed?

Hi

If you open or select a gmail and then choose "move to" from the 3 dot menu (top right) you can add a label and archive to that label in one step.

That's what's supposed to happen, but when I open a message from my Priority Inbox and then move the message it doesn't get archived - it remains in the Inbox with the new label added. It's a really annoying behavior that should have been corrected a long time ago.

As a workaround, instead of moving messages I change labels, unchecking Inbox and checking the desired label in one operation.

Hi, I think this is happening because you are using the Priority Inbox. I have stopped the Priority Inbox from syncing so new mail appears only in Inbox, I can use the Move function and the mail has the new label, is archived and is removed from the Inbox.

I understand that it only happens when open the message from Priority Inbox, but it shouldn't happen at all. With my workaround, I prefer to live with the problem and continue using Priority Inbox.

I think it depends on how you are accessing your Gmail - in the case of my HTC One, if I'm using the Gmail App, I can't create labels but I can move/change label using an existing label in which case the mail will be moved and archived and will no longer appear in my Inbox.

If I access Gmail using a browser I can do the above and in addition but separately, create new labels.

If I access Gmail using a browser on PC/Laptop I can choose an existing label or create a new label whilst viewing the particular mail, and as above the mail will be moved and archived.

:)
