how do I move photos from the gallery in my Samsung s3 to a contact

You don't "move" them per se.
1. Select a contact in your address book
2. Press the image square at the top of the screen
3. In the "Contact photo" menu that appears, press Image to select a pic from your Gallery
4. There will be a resize box to allow you to frame the image
5. If necessary. resize the box and move it around until satisfied
6. Press Done
