Moving to ATT before VZW contract expires?

I need a Global phone as soon as June, or July of this year. VZW global android selection is limited. My whole family's VZW contract expires Dec 2011 (3 lines total, no smartphones).

I thought about getting a plan for myself on ATT and later moving my family once their contract expires, but I'd really like to move my current VZW number to ATT.

Port my VZW number to Google voice?

Is the early termination fee pro-rated?

I assume I could probably get some money (Craig's list, ebay) for our 3 VZW texting phones.

Thoughts?

There is a prorated etf. It goes down $5 per month of service on feature phones.

Have you looked at the incedible 2? It is global. You'd also be losing unlimited data.

Thanks.

The incredible 2 is really the only option. Droid 2 is getting long in the tooth and the Droid 3 (this summer??) just has a bigger screen.

The unlimited data is definitely an issue I haven't thought much about. But thanks for mentioning it.

DON’T. I WAS an att customer for 37 yrs and absolutely no reguard for customer. Never able to get answers, always when u do actually talk to a real person, they all read the exact same script, pass u off to other depts, put u on hold forever and then hang up on u. Do not deliver on services sold, drop calls everywhere even with full bars. I am now no longer their dissatisfied customer. With VZW you talk to real people, they either give help or tell u why not and if they don’t know something they find answers and call u back or email. They have manners and talk to you like a person & not JUST more $.

I have been an At&t customer for about 10 years, never really had any issues to speak with them, their customer service recently has been great for me, but I don't have much contact. I did go from a BB to Sony X10 in Nov and then traded to a Dell Streak a month later and all that was smooth.

I also recommend going with the provider based on coverage first; cost and customer service is secondary. Since you only have dumb phones now, you don't have a data plan, so that isn't going to matter to you. I gave up my unlimited plan 6 months ago and never looked back to save $15. So far, I have not exceeded 60M of usage a month, but I spend 90% of my time on wifi.

Depending on your need for a world phone, you might be better just buying a prepaid phone.
