MP3 To Notification Sound

Please can someone help me.Can I place a trimmed ringtone for a notification sound i.e sms.I have tried various things and I only seem to add it to ringtone alert.I am using the Htc Desire and MP3 File trimmed through the Desire own trimmer.Any help will be much appreciated.ty

I think this is a root only thing.

After coming from the iPhone, I too, was hoping for custom notification tones.

Add a folder /sdcard/media/audio/notifications, then copy the MP3 in there. You should then have it in the list with the default tones.

I use handcent as my 'SMS manager' (if thats the correct term) and i can browse and configure incomming, outgoing, per-user (i believe, untested) tones..
