MP4 video strangeness

Hello all,

First post here!

I've only been an Android user since Christmas, having received a Kindle Fire as a gift. More recently I've upgraded from a Blackberry to a Samsung Galaxy S Android phone.

The problem is this:

I've converted some videos to mp4 format for use on my Kindle and Galaxy. Some of them simply won't play on the Samsung, but all of them play on the Kindle. They were all converted using the same video converter and to the same MP4 format. I've tried multiple conversion attempts, and multiple video players on the Samsung, but still no luck on only the same few videos. I don't know if it's because of an Aspect Ratio difference or what. The majority of the videos are 640x480, they play fine. The ones that won't play are of varying aspect ratios, including 1024x768 and 800x600.

I'm also trying to find a good media player that will loop individual videos and playlists. Asti Media Player works well on the Samsung, but can't seem to get it for the Kindle.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Steel Rat

No. My videos don't play well on my Galaxy 5 player. Compression artifacts everywhere. Why do the videos look so crisp on my home computer yet look so muddy on my Galaxy?

I can't think of why your MP4s aren't playing on your Galaxy S phone. These are problems that should have been worked out long ago. I despise conversion programs and I really hate artifacts. You get the bloody phone or player, unwrap it and watch the video that comes with the phone and it's gorgeous (of course). But when you try to put videos on your phone, expect nothing but problems!

I'm looking into the video situation now and will post any information I can find. It might be the format and the phone or it may be the conversion software. Most software aps I've seen have so many options that it might be the options one chooses that screws things up...who knows?

Companies are great at sales and marketing and not so much in technical help.

Actually I don't have any video artifacts. The videos that do play, which is most of them, look great. It's just that a handful of them don't want to play on the Samsung, but play fine on the Kindle. Extremely odd. And I've tried copying them up again in case there was some data corruption during the file transfer, but the same thing happens.

Thanks for the reply!

Hello, Steel Rate. Try to reset the video size according to your Samsung and Kindle Fire's resolution respectively. I use the program Brorsoft Blu-ray Video Converter Ultimate to convert video and my Blu-ray/DVD movie to H.264/MPEG-4 .mp4 for my Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. The output MP4 video is perfect.

Thanks for the reply.

Not sure what resolution is optimal for the Samsung. The built-in video camera's highes resolution is 1280x720, and those playback fine.

$65 is a little too rich for my blood for that converter, so I'll try a different one to see if I get different results.

How about get the Mobo Player for your Kindle Fire, it can play many video formats well for me.
And I also got a Free Video Converter from Aneesoft, so far works fine for me on general video formats.

Thanks Janet.

The problem isn't on the Kindle, it's on my Android phone, Samsung Galaxy S.

I did download Mobo a few days ago, but didn't like it, and it still had the issue with certain MP4s. I use Asti player now, since it supports looping video and the controls don't obstruct the screen.

Hello, again. If you feel the recommended tool is a bit expensive, you can try the Video Converter, which is only half price. But it can only help you to convert videos. To me, as a Blu-ray/DVD movie fan, I prefer the all-in-one tool as I recommend you.

I'm not convinced it's a converter issue. I tried another free converter and I get the same results on the same videos. I still think it has something to do with different resolution sizes.

It's not a huge problem, was just mainly wondering if anyone had come across this before.
