Help Muliple daily data hits - 50 page bill!

Hi,
In the past 5 months my phone (Galaxy S2 with Android 4.1.2) has been accessing data on average about 45 times per day, sometimes 60 times per day. I don't use the web browser that often, each hit is recorded on my monthly bill, but not the time of day. Each occurrence it only uses a fairly small amount of data, usually .20 Gb or less, so I can't simply look to see which app is using the most data to figure out the source. Now my monthly phone bill is over 50 pages long, it used to be about 7 pages.

I have only installed a few apps since last October when this all started to happen. One was a stock quote app, which I've un-installed. The other a weather app which I have set data access to wi-fi only. But the frequent data hits continue.

This frequent access drains the battery quicker and I'm also concerned of data roaming charges if I'm away from my home area.

Does anyone have any ideas what might cause this? Or any suggestions on how to determine, or what app, is causing this multiple daily data access?

Thanks for your help.

You could try turning background data off for all apps that you don't class as essential? They would still work, but would only use data when you were actually using the app.

I'm guessing you're using the phones stock data counter? Have you tried any other apps to monitor data usage?

Hi, thanks for the reply. I have just turned of background data as you suggested, and will check my usage online tomorrow. This may help, but still does not tell me what app is the culprit.

I have looked for other data monitor apps but they all seem to focus on the data volume, not the data frequency which is my problem. Do you know of one that shows the frequency of data use as well as volume?

Thanks again.

Try onavo: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.onavo.android.onavoid

I've not used in a while, but I seem to remember being able to drill down and get pretty detailed info on what was using my connection and when.

Likewise 3g Watchdog gave pretty detailed stats as far as I can remember: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.rgruet.android.g3watchdog

You could also try this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.antispycell.connmonitor

Start a "Live Capture", run it for a bit, then hit the "Order by most active" tab and it should give you an idea of which apps are using your connection most frequently.

Unless you have a real need to get 'push notifications', turn off the data and WiFi radios when the phone is asleep. I do this with MacroDroid automatically.
