Help Multiple problems

Ok I'll start by saying I'm new to the smartphone thing, but so far am not having a good time with my new HTC Magic.
It didn't come with an SD card, no android market icon, someone said you needed the sd card. After about 3 weeks, have sd card, still no Android and I am having a hard time using the HTC sync, just saying no device detected.
This is getting really frustrating, please give nay answers in simple terms.

Where did you purchase your phone? Not having the Market seems really fishy, and if HTC sync isn't working it's possible this is a knock off phone.

I think you may be right, I'm having problems with the treads to. Sent times are messed up.
