Must have Nexus 5 apps

This will be my first Nexus phone and naturally one without the bloat I've always had to deal with my Sprint phones.

Therefore, I'd love to keep this phone clean and not clutter it with crap I don't need.

My first month I'm trying T Mobile's prepaid. I don't anticipate using the 100 minutes and surely not the 5g. However, in the event I do need to use Google Voice, will all I need is the GV and Groove IP app?

Secondly, I use Google Music for my music streaming, Google+, Google maps, Facebook, Tapatalk, Runkeeper, Boomerang (instead of official gmail app), Instagram, and a couple casual games here and there.

My question, are there any important/major apps I should be looking to add? I want to keep things at a minimum. But I'll add important stuff.

What will everyone else use that I'm forgetting?

It really depends what you are interested in but I can't do without:

Media: Netflix, BT Sport,Sky Go, BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, TV Catchup...
Sports: Live Score Addicts, BBC Sport, Sky Sports News, ECB Cricket...
Others: Banking, Trainline, Light Flow, eBay, LinkedIn, Twitter, My O2...

I would say, have a play with "Trigger" (previously NFC Task Launcher), get some NFC stickers and try automating some things.

Try Tasker as well if you are feeling adventurous.

Vplayer is a great video payer for the Nexus 5.

ES file explorer is the best file explorer I have used and works well on the 5.

Just discovered that Sky Go isn't supported yet, which seems pretty standard for Sky. Hoping they sort that ASAP. Although have been tethering my iPad successfully this morning as an alternative.

Thanks for this. I was about to go in search of something to replicate the functionality of Smart Actions my RAZR Maxx had and it looks like this will do nicely.

You need to get a flashlight app.

You need to get a launcher so you can see those number count on your calling and txt msg icon.

*I use to have a Nexus 4.

SwiftKey - most important app of all.

I actually like the android keyboard better is that weird? I think the swipe function on it is much better, plus swift key lagged my GNex bad so it left a bad taste in my mouth (took like 2-3 seconds to have the keyboard pop up at times)

I would say Circle Battery Widget is close to a must have.

Tried Swiftkey for two weeks before getting my Nexus 5. Not installing it on my Nexus 5, I like Swype better.

One thing that bothered me about Swiftkey was that it did not work in the email fields.

Since I'll be using T Mobile prepaid, is there an app/widget that tracks data and minutes?

Yes, T-Mobile has an app that updates daily with your totals. Not sure if it has a widget, but I know you can store a permanent notification.

Any chance that is something on the play store?

Also, my wife and I live and die (sorts) by the Samsung GS3 stock calendar and particularly the widget. I don't believe the google calendar has a widget like the GS3 does.

Any recommendations for a calendar and widget? Something real close to the GS3 flavor?

The T-Mobile app is indeed on the play store. Should come up with a basic search.

The Google Calendar does have a widget, but I can't really compare it to the Samsung one because I haven't used a touchwiz phone since Gingerbread was still the latest OS version, lol.

Clean Calendar Widget is a beautiful (my opinion) calendar widget that supports Google and Exchange calendars. It let you do a transparent background which, when combined with white text looks great on this device.

I do not have a link to share with you but do a Google search and you will find this. Google Voice will be disabling third party app support starting in the spring of 2014. Groove IP and other apps like it will no longer function with Google Voice. I wouldn't set yourself up with that as an option at this point.

While this is true, Google may have Voice integrated into Hangouts by that point and thus render the whole shutdown moot. I pray that this is the case.

Does anyone know of a calendar app that supports Google calendar but on the home screen it actually shows the current date? I have an ipad and the apple app does it.

Not sure if this is exactly what you're after, but I have a Calendar Widget that takes over one of my home screens, very useful for checking your immediate diary. It syncs with Google calendar and the widget is fairly customisable. See screenshot below. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.co.johospace.jorte&hl=en
