MX Player - The end is near..

So a lot of us know MX Player was brought out some time ago with many users taking a gasp!!

Well here is some charming news of the evolution of MX Player; from your beloved offline player for all video needs into a video on-demand app. :(

I guess there is VLC afterwards, but I don't particularly like it. Damn it, MX Player is perfect.. I need a "shake fist" emote here..

Of course, but you just know one day you'll hit update all... and yes there is apkmirror. Not the same as having a nice upto date app.

I've gone years without touching "update all" ;).

And a "nice up to date app" isn't on offer here: it's like many other apps, your choice is a version that works or a version that's "up to date", which to my mind is an easy choice.

That's the way this business is: people want to make money, and often either ruin a good app to do so or sell it to someone else who will. Keep the old version until you find something that works as a replacement (I've still got the last pre-Cheetah Quickpic on my phone ;)).

I've got mixed feelings on this. I don't live in India, the primary target for this video-on-demand shift, and I use the pay-for version, so the ad issue isn't a big issue for me personally (...and really, the change to really annoying ad intrusiveness was taking place well before the original developers sold out to this Indian corporation). Plus, it's still a mysterious question as far as if the local multimedia player aspect is even going to be diminished or not.
Still, as far as codec capability I haven't encountered any significant differences between what MX Player and VLC can handle, and the (as is) user interface differences are pretty minor (and even less an issue with changes in the Settings menus). My preference to MX Player has always been is it has a more extensive number of hardware and software options in its Settings menu to optimize its performance. But again, it's just a matter of waiting to see what it will actually stop being just a local multimedia player app or if all those streaming content features get added on top what's already there.

I don't even know if Windows-based codec pack solutions like K-Lite or CCCP would be a plus or minus considering how Android is such a different platform. I tend to prefer apps, like MX Player or VLC, that have their own self-contained codecs, keeping media playback limited to apps that are intended just for media file types as opposed to codec packs where their content isn't so restricted.

Right up until you get that nice shinny new phone and your saved apps are gone.. I've never used apkmirror btw. Always playstore for me, far less risk that delving into the unknown like I did with my first android phone.

Of course, I'd do the same if I wanted cash. But I would also create a new app of the same elk for us purests. :p Yeah I loved Quickpic, EDIT I think my daughter got ahold of my phone and updated it for me!! Iirc..
