My contacts are missing numbers all of a sudden!

I had my Samsung Galaxy S3 working alright when yesterday the calls and other applications like whatsapp and messaging started to display just the numbers. I checked under my contacts where the names are all showing well but 90% of my contacts are now missing numbers. Please help.
