My dad is getting pissed

Hello people of forum, but I was wondering if their are "any techies" here

this seems to be happening a lot (out of my dads laziness) he relies on the voice to do everything on phone

After being out and out for a few hours on random occasions the voice will tell him their is no internet and can not be used, the thing is that the voice fixes itself as soon as we get home

It probably re-connects at home to your home Wi-Fi router. What kind of phone does he use? and what carrier? He may very well be in spotty areas of coverage when it goes out

Verify that the data on the phone is active when you are out and about. Just go out to where the maps doesn't work and try to do a Google search. Looks like data is disabled on the device.

Check various areas. Where I live, we have hills all over in town. If you get above or well below the tower, you might lose any type of reception until you either move or move into another tower's range.

I've seen my phone go from E to 3g to H and back to 3G in one 10 mile stretch of level road so I can just imagine what a change in elevation can do.

but the thing about this, is he believes at&t is screwing him over when he can't use the precious voice commands

at times mine will go out with my calling functions and the phone comes back once it's home on wifi

Well if it's a coverage problem there's nothing to do but educate him to the fact that no phone network on the planet gives 100% coverage.

If he looks at the screen when he has this problem he'll easily be able to see whether he has a usable signal.

does he and you live and play in the same area?
have the same network?

if yes... then his phone is setup wrong. data maybe turned off or blocked for that app.

if you can NOT find the setting to turn back on.
go to a carrier store.. and have them turn them on.
if cant do that.. hard rest the phone.. so everything is back to default

I agree with all the post. I have an S3 and if the settings on the S4 are like mine, there is the swipe down menu by simply swiping your finger down on any screen or app that will appear at the top, it is for quick settings to turn on and off stuff like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Sound, Power saving, location(GPS), Airplane mode, Hands free, Screen mirroring and more and one of those is also Mobile Data. I am forever fat fingering my phone and accidently swiping down on the screen and turning them on and off all the time, so check to see if Mobile Data is turned on or off, other than that, I have to say like everyone else is to check your coverage. I had AT&T for years and then 3g and 4g LTE came out and AT&T never upgraded in my area and I found it frustrating to even make a phone call on their network that only used Edge, So now I payout the ass and use Verizon, but I have great service so I guess it's worth the switch. Shop around if need be to find a better carrier for better coverage in your area.

If you have unlimited internet why not make a hotspot and let your dad connect. I'm sorry if this answer might be useless but hey it's just my opinion.

I know Google Now requires internet, but doesn't S-Voice work offline?

Apparently not. I just turned off data on my Note 10.1 and tried S-voice and was rudely informed that there was no internet connection, try again.

So here's the issue, Wondersam. For voice commands to work there must be an active internet connection, either Wifi or mobile data. The actual voice recognition takes place on the remote servers, not on the phone, so without the connection it can't convert voice to either text or a specific command.

If the problem only happens in a few spots, then it's definitely a signal strength problem. If it happens all the time your dad isn't near Wifi, then the phone isn't setup properly.

I agree with Dan (Don't let it go to your head, dan :p) that you should take the phone (and your dad) to the AT&T store and have them configure it for mobile data. It could simply be an incorrect APN setting or data plan, but it might be a defective radio.
