I had a IR on my Note 4 and s6 active, I did find it fun, but not useful. Most controls are wireless/Bluetooth now, and in turn most smart TVs have a blaster to control everything else. Wireless>TV>whatever you want to control. But it was cool to have, just go to a Best Buy and have fun 
. It was also good to have if you had say a head unit that you wanted to control, lost remote situation, remote for your ceiling fan, whatever, but I haven't honestly used mine in over a year.
