Help My files are disappering!!!

Lurker
I have a galaxy s7 edge with a 59gb SD card. A few days ago I opened the google Play app and noticed songs were missing. This continued and I downloaded more music only to find them disappear along w/several others later. I can't find my music anywhere in the phone. About 2 days later I noticed my pictures were disappearing from gallery even tho I could find them in google photos. In gallery & google play I have been reduced about 99% pictures and music. This is very frustrating.

Hi all! I don't know what the heck happened? But I just put a brand new 128 gig micro SD card in my galaxy s7 edge. The sd card is sandisk brand. I got it at best buy store. And I transfered 5 videos from photos to the sd card. They were 4k videos. Not that that should matter? And after the transfer. I deleted the videos off of photos on the phone. And I went back to the sd card and the videos apparently got deleted off of the sd card also? So can anyone tell me if I might have done something wrong? Why the videos deleted off of the sd card? Thanks! God bless you!

Did you run SD Insight on it. As I stated earlier if SD Insight shows the manufacturer as "invalid" or "unknown" that's a counterfeit, and will give all sorts of problems, like losing and corrupting files.

Thanks for getting back ti me! And well first of all best buy electronics stores are a huge corporate franchised stores. Sort of like Walmart stores? They don't sell bad or non legitimate products. And sandisk sd cards are a legitimate good brand. But anyway so how do I run sd insite on the sd card? Please explain. Thanks!

Just install it from the Play Store as @El Presidente posted earlier, and then run it.

If necessary post a screen-shot of the results you see.

FYI Sandisk along with Samsung are probably one of the most counterfeited SD brands. Even if you bought it from a legitimate place, still check it anyway. Fakes can be passed into supply chains, between leaving the factory and getting to the store. Files just disappearing from an SD is definitely not right.

Yea I'm sure that that there are fakes out there no matter what the store I get it from. But my phone came straight from Samsung corporation. But yea I'll check the sd card. But how do I check the sd card to make sure it's legitimate? And also I did hold on to the store recipt. So I can take the sd card back to the store and get another one or a money refund? Thanks!

I just checked the sd card with that app. Thanks! But yes the sd card is legitimate not fake according to what the app said. So I assume that's not the issue? It may be just me? Maybe I just did something wrong when I transfered the video files to the card?

Omg! I think I know what happened? I don't think I formatted the sd card first before I transfered the videos to the card? I bet that was the issue? I'll see? But if that's what happened? Then I feel like an idiot! I know to format things? Geesh!

Nope that's not the issue? I just transfered a picture to the sd card. And when I deleted the picture off of my phone? The picture deleted off of the sd card also.

You need to understand 3 things, your internal storage and your SD card storage. If not saved to EXTERNAL storage, it's gone.

Hello! Thanks! Yea I called verizon my carrier. And through talking with them. They explained to me that when you put an SD card in the phone? That the phone memory and the card memory becomes 1 bigger memory? I thought that the sd card would be partitioned separate from the phone memory? And when you transfer files to the card and from card to the phone? That the files would just transfer through a port between the 2 memories? The card memory and the phone memory? So well do you know of an app or a way that I could partition the sd card memory from the phone memory? You would think that that would be the way it is with the sd card and the phone memory? But nope. So if you know of a way to do that? Please let me know? Thanks!

Hi, I don't know whether the S7 Edge is the same as my HTC M9 in this respect, there seems to be ever more differences between devices these days, but on my M9, when a new SD card is inserted I have two options, to format it as 'portable' SD storage or Internal 'adoptive' storage.

The former means it is separate from the internal storage and can be removed and used in another device or read by laptop/PC.

The latter means it becomes part of the internal storage, it is encrypted during this process and cannot be removed and used in any other device without reformatting.

I have mine formatted as 'portable', ie removable, storage and the two storage areas are quite separate. I can copy files from one storage area to the other, and delete them as appropriate.

Incidentally, the previous posts about checking the SD card validity were directed at the 'thread starter' who had a different issue to the one you have :).

I hope the Verizon rep told you that merging the two memory locations into one big memory location is an OPTION. It's not automatic, either... you have to select it. I strongly advise AGAINST it: if the phone fails, your files are gone. If you keep the two memory locations separate and your critical files are on the SD card, just take the card out and put it in a new phone. Done.

However, if that option is selected, then all the data will be wiped as the memory resets itself.

I've been having similar problems with my SD cards. Up until about 8 or so months ago I had no such issues with any of my SD cards, branded or no.

Yes there are many times when my operator would hide files or folders but that problem was solved when I ran a reliable file manager which 'revealed' the missing items forcing them to appear elsewhere.

However now the game they play is to corrupt files - whether they truly corrupt them or just flag them in their own way I don't know.

Same applies to deleting. Of course ultimately the card is trashed.

This has only been happening within this last year, I have no idea what recourse to the law I have because it pertains to my rights under the data protection act.
