Help My friend can't see my messages

My friend doesn't have smartphone and when they send me messages, I get them fine. But whenever I try to send them back it just appears as empty boxes, how do I fix this?
 
Are you using emoji or other non letter characters on your texts? The receiving phone may not be able to understand emoji.
