My HTC MyTouch 3G is missing wi-fi as a feature!

I just bought a new unlocked HTC MyTouch 3G from Newegg this past President's Day weekend,

"contract free".

I intended to just use my existing T-Mobile prepaid account and just enjoy the phone using

wi-fi. The problem is, I cannot log into Google using the phone b/c I don't even see wi-fi as

an option. One of the big reasons I bought this phone was to use wi-fi to get my apps. I

don't need 3G service.

So what can I do?

From what i know, you only get wifi as an option on newer devices with Android version 2.1 or higher.
In your situation the easiest thing you can do is borrow a friend's tmobile sim card with a data plan and use your existing email and such to log-in and then proceed to switch out the sims and use your own.
There is another route you can take but it requires you to be somehwhat tech savvy. Just google search logging in android through wifi. I would link you up, but i'm on my phone at the moment. Sorry.

Thank you for responding. Looks like you were right. I was doing some research on the "logging in android through wifi". I didn't find what I was looking for but I did find this:

"Android 2.2 to Bring Wi-Fi Hotspot Functionality"
Maximum PC | Android 2.2 to Bring Wi-Fi Hotspot Functionality

Unfortunately, I don't have any T-mobile friends on a data plan.

Can I "root" into Android OS v2.3? If so, how would I go about doing that?

Yes, if you Root, you will be able to log-in. I don't know how stable 2.3 would be for your device, but 2.2 would run great on it.
As far as rooting your phone, I don't know much about the Mytouch3g, but the rooting method should be very easy.

Just so you know lol.

Then from there just search how to load custom ROMs on the mytouch3g, just make sure the rom you choose is based on version 2.1 or higher.

Funny thing is, once I was able to borrow a friend's SIM that has a data plan associated to it, and login to Google on the phone, the wi-fi was then available.

Actually, I'm pretty sure anyone with a MT3G will tell you, the 2.2 upgrade made their phone basically unusable. The hardware just doesn't have the power to run it. I have a MT3G gathering dust in a junk drawer for this very reason. I waited months and months for the update, and when it came, my phone became a paperweight.

I found a guy off Craigslist. For $25, he came by and put Cyanogen mod 6.1.0 and that got me Android 2.2. It's okay but not fast. Wi-fi worked as soon as I registered the phone w/ Google.

I still think IOS has better gaming apps than Android.

And yet you paid someone $25 for what? Rooting your phone?:D

It was still cheaper than 1 month of prepaid data ($50). And it took the guy almost an hour to crack it.

All my friends & co-workers were either too cheap to have a data plan (GSM) or just had CDMA (no SIM cards) w/ their data plans.
