My latest guinea pig device

Now you've probably seen all the junk cheap tablets coming from China lately, anything from $60 iPhone copycats running an almost decent mockup of iOS (or likely the Chinese MIUI ROM with a theme ) and the inundation of fake Galaxy Notes/S3s/S4s out there that shatter if you so much as look crosseyed at them, and you probably know that i just about adore every one of 'em. i often use spare cash to snatch up any that catch my eye, and use them as disposable guinea pigs to test out that one or so hacks that i've been itching to use but too afraid to try on a $499 Nexus 10. if successful, it does help any new member who bought a cheap device but wants to, shall we say, download from Google Play but cannot, and if i fail, well, i don't lose that much. if anything i get a pretty paperweight to add to my collection of paperweights.

Now this one i have never seen before. you've heard of Chromebooks, right? the Netbook that sells for a bit of an oversized price given that netbooks are about dead these days, that run ChromeOS. well, say hello to the JellyBook!

It's literally a tiny netbook running Android 4.1. my latest grab at the Big Lots and one of the next that i'll likely brick. it's got decent hardware, even 1GB of RAM (most come with a paltry 256-512MB that struggles to run ICS), and a 1.2 GHz Dual-Core processor. not sure if it is pre-rooted or not, but if it is, i will see if my Play Store hack works on it, and try my hand at a custom ROM or recovery on a cheap device.

It sports a very low-resolution 7" screen, and for some reason they made a USB power brick with the port on a CORD as opposed to one built-in the plug itself. it has an ethernet port, and even an mini-HDMI port, and SD storage slot, 4GB of internal storage, and Android 4.1. currently i have yet to fully charge it and i would rather do that before posting some screencaps as with these types of products, even a dead battery will brick 'em. later i will add to my thread on any progress for those interested.

EDIT: well, i have finally found the one oddball that was NOT pre-rooted, so Play Store is currently a no-go. however, it already had the Google Play Services.apk on there so other apps, such as Play Music and Play Movies, does work. it performs amazingly well and seems pretty stable. Play Store seems only a matter of rooting the device somehow (my dev laptop isn't with me so that will have to wait) and simply copying the APK to /system/app. the only glitch so far is that the top row of letter keys (Q through P) don't work. it's not a hardware failure as the symbols those keys use from the 'fn' button do work, so it's probably some part of the keyboard used. i tried Google Keyboard without success. it does have the option to select on-screen keyboard which is a workaround so far. of course, unless the keyboard glitch affects all devices, this won't stop me from my goal of a custom recovery and a custom ROM.

How much was it? What model is it? I can't find it on the Big Lots website.

Not that I can drop the cash on it but it's still interesting anyway. :D

Big Lots has it for $99. the model is unknown--it's Chinese and cheap. it's got a very smelly cheap odor when charging (LOL) but other than that, it seems stable enough. just don't run Chrome minimized and try using Netflix. it has 1GB of RAM but is crash-prone in the form of freezing and requiring a hard reset with a paper clip if you try doing too much with it--apparently it is either overheating or the GPU isn't up to the task of HD video streaming while keeping tabs in Chrome up to date. i got it simply to try out a hack that worked on one device and curious if it works on them all, and to try my hand at a custom ROM for a cheap device.

The Device is called a 'CrystalView 7" Android Netbook' and i think it's in-store only. i also bought a Chromebook as well, for only $100 more. for a daily use device, i'd recommend a Chromebook over this one, this one would be better if the keyboard was fully-functional, and a bit more stable with multiple apps running. as-is it's just a cheap test device. it plays Netflix well, has a ok quality LCD, plenty of sound loudness, an HDMI port, and support for external mice/trackballs. it will play light games, has support for Play Music, Play Books, Play Movies, and everything except Play Store itself (which i'm fixing). it comes without any bloatware, and only basic stuff like Facebook, Netflix, Gmail and the like preinstalled, apparently as user apps as i can uninstall them completely.

EDIT: keyboard appears to have fixed itself. either i triggered a specific layout or something else but all keys work. one bug down, dozens to go!

Supports all Play apps except the Play Store:
