Possibly. It's been noted that two things can help speed up your android in general, and that is to periodically delete all your texts and empty your browser cache and history.
If you get SMSBackup (FREE) from the market it backs up your SMS/MMS messages to your Gmail account. It's really cool. All it does is silently forward your SMS/MMS to your gmail account, labels them "SMS", threads them, and archives them. So you don't have to worry about them popping up in your inbox. Every day or so, I delete threads or sms, just to stay on top of it. I'd say it takes it about 2-10 minutes to backup a txt, so if you're in a conversation over text, best to wait until you're done to delete the thread/txts.
