Help My phone got stolen - What security measures to take?

Al Kemizt

Lurker
My phone got stolen 2 months ago, it had a 4 digit pin so I was thinking the guy couldnt get in but I checked Google and Facebook device login history last month and my stolen phone was synced that day. It may be a big problem if the guy got into my email and messenger account. I had a guest account setup on the phone so the thief shoulda been able to use it but that doesnt explain how my google and Facebook accounts were synced from the device, unless it automatically syncs them even if he didn't get into the main profile on the phone?

I logged out of gmail and facebook on all devices and changed the passwords, what im wondering though is will the thief still have access to all the emails and messages that were stored on the phone? The guy already got my social security number so I need to minimize the damage as much as possible. I tried to remotely wipe the device with Google but it cant locate it whenever I try.

I'm assuming you reported the phone stolen to your carrier and got a new SIM for the replacement? What kind of phone was stolen and what version of Android was it running?

First thing I would do was enable 2-step verification on your Google account. and then, just to be safe, I'd change all the passwords again. Your Google accounts and Facebook accounts are not tied to your SIM card, so they'd still try to sync, even if the phone were locked, but the thief would have had to enable some sort of wifi connection. I couldn't tell you if enabling WiFi on a guest account would open the data connection to the whole phone.
