My phone is stock on 2G network

Zion baba

Newbie
My phone doesn't come up with the 3G/4G network......i have done everything, from setting the preferred network mode to 4G/3G/2G and even have my APN settings intact, i have had similar issues with ny previuos device but i got it easily fixed with MTK engineering mode, but my Huawei Honor 4a runs on a Qualcomm processor...pls i need urgent help, because this 2G is quite slow with downloads...thanks in advance.

We don't have enough information to judge, but this is a very rare problem which nevertheless you've had it twice, and the one thing you have told us has changed inbetween is the phone (other things may have changed, but that's the only one we know has). So my first instinct is to consider things that have not changed rather than assume it's the thing that has.

So, is the problem localised, i.e. does it only occur in particular areas? If so then it's definitely a network problem.

If you swap SIMs with someone else on the same network do you have the same problem when using their phone? If so it's either your SIM or a carrier problem related to your account (or some group of accounts). In which case contact your carrier again, tell them that you've ruled out your phone so it's either their network or your SIM, and either way you need them to fix it. Conversely if you get 3G/4G in their phone but they only get 2G in yours then we know that it is your handset that's the problem. And for completeness, if your SIM works fine in their phone and their SIM works fine in yours then my guess would be your SIM is the problem (I've known SIMs that are failing work in one phone and not another), but can't be sure.

Once we know whether it's your phone or not then we can worry about what to do. Though if it is your phone I suggest backing up all of your data, because it's possible you may have to try a factory reset or a reflash of the phone.

Which carrier are you using? Carriers rely on different cellular networks and smartphones come with different cellular radio chips that must correspond with their respective carrier's cellular network. Full compatibility with 3G/4G/LTE is determined by those radio chips, not the SIM card. (a SIM just authenticates and is relative to your account with the carrier) and not necessarily the APN settings. So it might be a matter where your particular phone, Honor 4A, just isn't compatible with your carrier.
This isn't definitive but looking up a 4A
https://www.fonearena.com/huawei-honor-4a_6875.html
it apparently supports:
GSM : 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
HSDPA : 900/2100 MHz
(no listing of which bands, which correlates more with 4G/LTE)
If that does match up with your carrier's cellular network, than there is a problem to look into. If not, you either need to switch to a carrier that is compatible with your phone, or get a different phone that's compatible with your carrier (those radio chips are typically not modular and interchangeable, they're soldered directly to the motherboard).
.

Ah, good call - why did I assume that this was a problem that had developed, as opposed to the phone never working with 3G/4G?

900 and/or 2100 HSDPA would be available on the majority of UMTS networks worldwide (but none at all in North America). I found two other sites that claim it should support TD-LTE bands 38, 39, 40 and 41 and FD-LTE bands 1 and 3 - not a wide selection, but would give you a fighting chance in much of the world (once again, no use in North America).

I am from Nigeria, West Africa... Will it work with the bands

OK, that's good.

Have you tried swapping SIMs with someone to work out whether the problem is with the phone or not? And does the problem occur everywhere but only within a few km of certain locations?

Try going to
https://willmyphonework.net/
and fill in your info - Brand, Model, Sub Model, Country, and of course Carrier. Again, different carriers rely on different cellular networks and if your phone's internal configuration doesn't match your particular carrier, your SIM card isn't going to change that.. Apparently that site lists several carriers in Nigeria -- Airtel, Bitflux, Etisalat, Glo, MTN, Multilinks, Ntel, and Visafone -- and that may not even be a complete listing but check to see if your particular model will work with your carrier. Just perusing through some of those carriers do support 2G/3G/4G/lTE, some no at any, and some a mix (usually 2G and 3G but not 4G), but that varies depending on just what model you have.

Damn!! My model is scl-tl00h and 3G and 4G ain't compatible with most carriers, means my phone is useless.

Like is there anything that can help??

If your model is not compatible with your network, no. The only thing you can do in that case is change phone or change network to one it is compatible with (if one is available). There is nothing you can do to change the frequency bands the phone supports.

It's a hardware issue, the radio chip inside that model is an integrated circuit chip that's soldered to the motherboard itself. A SIM card can't compensate for that. You have two options, either switch to a different carrier that is compatible with that model of phone (if there are alternatives that also provide coverage where you live), or get a different phone that matches up with your current carrier.

That variant was specifically made for China Mobile only, in China. Any other carrier and country, and it's 2G only. There's nothing else you can do with the thing. The only 3G mode it has is TD-SCDMA, which is unique to China Mobile.

For information, "00" in any Huawei model numbers, means it's a China variant, rather than international.

Thanks for the info, maybe I'll get a portable router.

I just feel bad that the LTE doesn't work also

And I noticed my phone becoming laggy after i installed google play services....most apps crash..the play store also crashes as soon as it loads apps, is there a way to fix this?
Cos i really like to use hangouts and other google apps

But LTE should work in other countries

It only has the TD-LTE bands and modes which are used in China, by China Mobile and China Unicom.

In China, these China Mobile only phones are usually cheaper than their more international cousins, because manufacturers don't have to pay foreign patent licensing fees on them for things like WCDMA technology. That's basically why China Mobile invented their own "TD" modes.

Where did you install the Play Store app from?

On Huawei China variant phones, Google Play should be able to be installed from Huawei's own system AppGallery store. That's what I did with my Mate 10 China variant, and all Google services work fine, as long as I'm using a VPN as I'm in China.

So you meani can't get a 4G network as well??

I tried downloading from the store, but you know as i don't speak Chinese it'll be a bit difficult because i couldn't find it, so i used Google installer apk
