If it's after you have sync'd with your PC, then there's usually a tick box or setting in whatever tool you're using to transfer the pictures to control whether the pictures are deleted after they're copied (or maybe, whether the pictures are Moved or Copied).
If this is not the case, please re-post letting us know which phone you're using and when the photos go missing.
