my samsung tab 2 wontcinnect to my tv via hdtv adapter

My Samsung galaxy tab 2 10.1 won't connect to my tv screen via my hdtv adapter. I have connected the adapter into my tablet, connected the mains plug and hdmi cable and all i get on my tv is no video signal. Please help!!
