My unlock code

Fernley

Newbie
So I called AT&T and they gave me an unlock code for my phone (HTC Inspire 4G).

The reason I did this is because of some potential international travel this next year and the intention of putting a SIM card in my phone for use OCONUS.

My questions are;
Can I unlock the phone now using my existing SIM?
If so what is the benefit?

Thanks

Typically you need the "new SIM" installed, in order to be prompted for the "SIM unlock code". There may be a way to open the applet via other methods however.

Once unlocked, you can use the SIM for any other GSM network which use the phone's frequencies.

I also unlocked my inspire a few months ago. I used my friends Sim card to activate it. He uses T-mobile for his carrier. Do you have any friends on T-Mobile? If so ask if you can use their Sim card. It only takes a min.

In fact I did that just yesterday. It worked perfectly.

So now my phone is "unlocked" which is cool.

Now what exactly does that do for me?

Theoretically now I can switch carriers and keep my phone. OK... I guess now I can use my phone outside the US (maybe), but beyond that is there any other benefit?
