Usually it's a generic dot of an app that cannot fit in the notification bar.

Yes, it means you have more notifications that can fit. Pull down the notifications to see what else is there.
What is annoying is that it does this before you actually run out of space: Google coded it for devices with notches and seem unable to change it for devices that don't (such as my Pixel 2, where since Google is the manufacturer there is nobody to blame for this stupidity but Google themselves).

I also think you just need to open the shutter to the end. Did you manage to solve the problem?
