MyTouch 4G vs. Samsung Galaxy S 4G

AustinTech

Android Enthusiast
So I am contemplating the above two phones and am leaning towards the Samsung 4G - this is the new Galaxy S 4G that came out on Feb 23 to T-mobile.

My reservations on the Samsung are:

  • people on this forum don't seem to like Samsung phones
  • low quadrant score (does that even mean anything?)
  • the UI, I plan to get Launcher Pro Plus so that will help
  • never had a Samsung phone
The MyTouch gets a great quadrant score, but the screen is small and inferior. I like HTC sense though.

Anyway - anyone what to voice an opinion or offer advice? I'd appreciate it!!

Inferior is a strong word IMO. I'd say less capable;). personally having had htc and samsung phones I know there is no contest. Htc FTW! the galaxy 4g does have some things going for it. It is the largest android screen on tmo, slightly faster real world data speeds (and I do mean slightly faster), a more vibrant but, contrary to popular belief, slightly less efficient screen than standard amoled and slcd (and I mean very slightly). On the software front, sense kills touchwiz hands down. I say you should go hands on with them both and see what you like. I personally will never buy another samsung phone and on the other hand have been nothing but pleased and satisfied with my htc devices.

I agree w/ BT. I had the Vibrant (the original one) & then got the MT4G. WORLDS of difference!!! I don't think I'd ever get another Samsung product again, either. I'm pretty sure I'm an HTC convert :). Plus...no camera flash ("night mode" did NOT live up to the hype) & no LED indicator are now dealbreakers for me.

I actually dont like Sense....Well i mean i do.

If i had to rank all the launchers I'd prefer

1)Touchwiz
2)Timescape(Xperia)
3)Blur(Found on the Droid X & future devices)
4)Sense
5)Stock Vanilla

Touchwiz is iphone-esque in a way but I like it because it is visually more appealing.
Sense doesn't really do it for me...and technically on mytouch devices, this really isn't sense to me. It's like Sense lite

I finally had the chance to play with a Galaxy S 4g and I actually like the device and it seemed a lot faster than my mytouch.

Its really just a 4g vibrant, but to each their own;). Choice is a wonderful thing. I'm wondering though, in what way do you see mySense as sense lite? People always say this but there isn't much to back that up. There are really no sense features missing outside of not working on htcsense.com and the favs button instead of the customize button (both are stupid and pointless but favs had more everyday use than customize at least for me). All sense widgets and apps still work plus without the lag of touchwiz (just look at the galaxy s forums and you'll see the lengths they've gone to to try and fix lag issues). I think really it comes down to preference, that's why I always say go hands on. Its the only way to be sure of what you'll like better.

They are both on about the same level but it depends what you want:

mytouch 4g:

-1ghz 2nd gen snapdragon (better for productivity)
-768 mb ram
-8 gb sd card with 4gb internal (only 1mb available to user)
-3.8'' display not super AMOLED
-capped to 15 mb download speed on 4g
-$99.99 with 2 year contract at bestbuy right now, maybe only for this week

Galaxy s 4g:

-1 ghz hummingbird (better for graphics processing ie. games)
-512 mb ram
-16 gb sd card
-4.0'' super AMOLED gorrilla glass
- no camera flash
-capped 21 mb download speeds on 4g
-$199.99 with 2 year contract

-Both have 5 mega pixel cameras that record 720p at 30 fps
-Both are capable of t-mobile 4g

depending on what you want take your pick, you can't go wrong because these are the most powerful phones offered by t-mobile.

Perhaps sense lite was not the best choice of words

i just prefer the sense found on the incredible, evo, and all other htc devices not on tmobile

Lol, I getcha. I like the look of the dock bar on other sense phones too (though I'm not sold on the customize button) plus the bubble icons aren't great on mySense (but there are ways around that and without root too). I'm hoping a good rom from the new wildfire s system dump comes out for the 4g. That'd be sweet true sense 2.1 on top of android 2.3.2 :D

Yeah, I love the "mysense" with launcher pro running. I love the white swype keyboard and the notification bar in black looks great.

An update - I went over to t-mobile and was playing with the phones when I overheard a guy returning his phone and cancelling his contract. He said that t-mobiles coverage sucks...blah blah.

Scared me away from t-mobile just a bit. I hear the same things about ATT, but I have good coverage with them. Not perfect, but still good. Anyone want to comment on the T-mobile coverage? I am in Atlanta.

I've been a TMO user in Atlanta for about 8 years. ATT & TMO coverage in Atlanta seem to be the about the same. HOWEVER, with TMO wifi calling TMO's coverage is great.

T-mobile coverage really isn't as bad as I originally heard and like the post above me says, WiFi calling makes coverage even better

Anymore insights into this? I too am trying to make the same decision. I am leaning towards the Galaxy S. I'm really drawn towards the display and style. The myTouch, however, has much more internal memory and RAM. I really can't decide.

You are in a mytouch section therefore you are going to get an
Extremely EXTREMELY biased answer

I, however, am not biased to any particular device.

I don't have much knowledge of the Galaxy S
but i would probably get it as I like the look
and feel of the Galaxy S 4g.

it has less ram and internal memory but I hear
the speeds of 4g are faster.

The screen is it's biggest selling point. I would
definitely get one if i was buying one.

Right now myself, I am holding out for a sidekick 4g
and seeing how that phone is going to be or possibly
switching back to windows phone.

Aside from people complaining about it basically being
a slightly updated Vibrant or a slightly beefed up Skinned
nexus S, i haven't read many complaints(aside from the typical
whiner)

Well I've had my Samsung S 4G for about four days now and I really love it! My coverage is actually pretty good. Today at lunch I was pulling 8 Mbps down. Voice coverage has been spot on. Tomorrow I am going out of town so I will check back after my trip. The phone itself is awesome and accessories are cheap.

I personally have a MT4G and I had a Vibrant 4G for like 2 weeks when it first came out. Now I got the Vibrant 4g because I loved my origonal Vibrant. My opinion is that Samsung put this poor product out to compete with HTC and didn't spend time to be origonal. HTC actually put out a new product instead of revamping a old one like Samsung did. Seriously the only difference between Vibrant and Vibrant 4g is Vibrant 4g has HSPA+ capabilities, a front facing camera, 150 mAh added to battery capacity and a silver back cover. The worst is that they took the 16gb internal memory out of the Vibrant 4g. Still no flash on the camera and no notification light. Long story short I sold it after 2 weeks and stuck with using MT4G. And as for SENSE and TouchWiz I hate both of them I like ASOP pure Android ROMS that I can make the way I want them. If I was going to stick with the origonal phones UI I would just go get a Iphone lol. Really the only way to judge a Android phone is in Development and ROMS. Definitely go with a MT4G over a GS4G if you want a better well rounded phone.
