N1 vs N900

I could never afford either phone at the moment.

I am wondering how the android crowd feels about the nokia n900. I am personally interested in both, and find them highly desirable. (Oh if only I was one of those smucks who could get two phones and justify it lol).

They are both really nice phones. I've seen the N900 in action, and its just amazing. Maemo I've heard is a really good OS.

It wouldn't matter if I could afford either though, since there is no GSM coverage here anyways.

Imho, no ordinary consumer should ever consider the n900. Nokia themselves said that the internet tablet (not phone) is targeted at hardcore hackers and not the mass consumer. what does that mean? it is just a mega powerful computer with a half-baked user interface. If programming is your hobby, then the n900 is your next best toy.

my friends owns a n900 and i had a play with it. trust me, you dont want it. zooming in the photo gallery for example can only done with the volume rocker, and each zoom jumps without any transition. the same goes for the browser. ovi store? nowhere close to the amount of apps in android market what more to say apple app store? it is ugly as hell. the screen is soft plastic (you can feel your finger pressing it down), unresponsive (resistive) and just plain inaccurate (which is why you need to use the stylus more often than your finger)

I never understand why people consider the n900 unless they're programmers. I guess theyre just being ignorant and thinking that just cuz its the most expensive nokia phone out there means its the best.

I own n810 :/

While I do agree that the n810 is very much hacker oriented...

I have read several reviews stated the n900 isn't a horrible choice for consumers... I can't speak from personal experience.

sorry i dont mean to be insulting and all, i just wanted some people to be more aware of the various high end phones you can choose from.

the friend i was talking about isnt a hacker and i feel really sorry that he spent so much money on a phone that isnt as satisfying to use as my much cheaper htc hero. even worse, he cant afford to replace it with a new one.

im sure for the average user, you rather spend the same amount of money on a N1 with google voice to text, 3d gallery, 50k apps, responsive screen, etc. than a N900 which has a ugly gallery and relatively small number of apps. if the n900 is half the price of N1, it might be a bargain but this is just not the case. hope my experience with both phones help. if u switch from s60 to android, Im sure you'd be amazed at the gap between different mobile os nowadays.

I do feel sorry for your friend. 500$ is a lot of money on a phone your not happy with. The n900 is much more rough and your average user would probably prefer a nexus one.

However, if we are discussing what your average user would prefer an att subsidized iphone would be preffered over the nexus one. Everyone has an iphone, you only pay 100$ for an iphone with an upgrade and you are so much "cooler" for having it.

That is the mentality.. The truth is.. If I had a nexus one.. I would probably get waayyyy more attention than the "cool kids" with the iphone... I personally am just obsessed with the tech specs and dynamics of it...

1 ghz processor with open development encouraged yields a lot of possibility.. and I hate how people critize the nexus one for not fully utilizing its potential. I have seen a number of reviews mention it in a negative manner. I personally think that is a great thing.. A phone comes out that can run toe to toe with iphone which has years of refinement.. and it has the potential to go further? thats pretty cool imho.

*edit* I'm not trying to get side tracked on iphone vs nexus one by any means here.

I am only trying to point out that average consumer mentality is probably not the same as what you would find here on the android forums. While the N900 is rougher than nexus one and that can't be denied, the question remains "is it fixable" and "will it be fixed".

I have read a number of reviews as I said stating it is a great phone and has a long way to go in the process of being even better. I have read others like you where, unless your a tech savvy person.. your sol.

Hmm I see your point of likening the N1 to iPhone the same way N900 is to N1. I also agree that future updates may improve N900's usability. But dont you think by the time Meego is officialy released, Nokia would have build a new flagship device specifically designed for the Meego platform? Also, the N1 will most probably see through Froyo and Gingerbread.

Im not sure if you're a hardcore hacker or just a tech geek like me but even the N900 is too technical for me. I cant appreciate it unless I know C++, Java, etc. the same way an iPhone user cant appreciate the 1ghz QSD, noice cancelling specs of the N1. Put it this way, if you can choose only ONE personal/work computer between a Windows and Linux, if you choose Windows then N1 is right for you but if you choose Linux, N900 is yours. As much as I read Engadget everyday, I still cant appreciate the power and hackibility of Linux over the compatibility and support of Windows.

I may have jumped the gun in judging who wants a N900 but comparing the N1 and N900 is like comparing apples and oranges. One is a phone, the other a internet tablet that makes calls, both targeting two massively different audiences.

Im glad that you appreciate the N1 like I do and that I can carry out a proper discussion with you unlike so many other trolls in this forum :D

I am a tech geek.

I doubt I know enough about the linux platform to get much use out of the n900 honestly.. but, after a few more years of college we will see :D.

I have a major interest in linux although I've found it very hard to "jump into".

I already know a little bit of java, and will be learning more fall semester. I find the n810's biggest downfall (one I am most worried about carrying over into n900) is the jargon of linux.

I personally *love* the built in app manager for n810 which is very similar to ubuntu, where you can browse all the great free programs that are uploaded by users.

The biggest downfall is that the jargon used in describing the programs, makes it sometimes impossible to tell what programs actually do.

I am hoping at some point in the future I will be able to develop for the android platform. (maybe make a few pennies off of it XD).

I've had both Incredible and N900. I prefer the Incredible. There were very few apps to download/install when I purchased the N900 and doubt that has changed much since that user market is so small. Also, the battery was even worse on the N900 for me compared to any Android device I've owned... go figure.

I'll actually feel jealous once you figure out how to write Java and stuff :o Im a medical student and probably will never find time to learn all that jargon although I find people that can do that pretty cool. Anyways, good luck learning about that and keep me posted if you ever publish a new android app! Cheers

@howie its a shame it will probably never get a decent user base to take off...

@tuahogary I am a comp sci major I decided to do what I love in life. Hopefully I will be able to make enough cash doing it to afford all the gadgets I want XD. I can already write some java.. nothing with any serious gui or anything.. But, I have made a few crazy math programs. Like finding the first 1000 prime numbers and listing them in rows of 10 XD. Very useless.. but, gotta start somewhere.
