Imho, no ordinary consumer should ever consider the n900. Nokia themselves said that the internet tablet (not phone) is targeted at hardcore hackers and not the mass consumer. what does that mean? it is just a mega powerful computer with a half-baked user interface. If programming is your hobby, then the n900 is your next best toy.
my friends owns a n900 and i had a play with it. trust me, you dont want it. zooming in the photo gallery for example can only done with the volume rocker, and each zoom jumps without any transition. the same goes for the browser. ovi store? nowhere close to the amount of apps in android market what more to say apple app store? it is ugly as hell. the screen is soft plastic (you can feel your finger pressing it down), unresponsive (resistive) and just plain inaccurate (which is why you need to use the stylus more often than your finger)
I never understand why people consider the n900 unless they're programmers. I guess theyre just being ignorant and thinking that just cuz its the most expensive nokia phone out there means its the best.
sorry i dont mean to be insulting and all, i just wanted some people to be more aware of the various high end phones you can choose from.
the friend i was talking about isnt a hacker and i feel really sorry that he spent so much money on a phone that isnt as satisfying to use as my much cheaper htc hero. even worse, he cant afford to replace it with a new one.
im sure for the average user, you rather spend the same amount of money on a N1 with google voice to text, 3d gallery, 50k apps, responsive screen, etc. than a N900 which has a ugly gallery and relatively small number of apps. if the n900 is half the price of N1, it might be a bargain but this is just not the case. hope my experience with both phones help. if u switch from s60 to android, Im sure you'd be amazed at the gap between different mobile os nowadays.
I am a tech geek.
I doubt I know enough about the linux platform to get much use out of the n900 honestly.. but, after a few more years of college we will see .
I have a major interest in linux although I've found it very hard to "jump into".
I already know a little bit of java, and will be learning more fall semester. I find the n810's biggest downfall (one I am most worried about carrying over into n900) is the jargon of linux.
I personally *love* the built in app manager for n810 which is very similar to ubuntu, where you can browse all the great free programs that are uploaded by users.
The biggest downfall is that the jargon used in describing the programs, makes it sometimes impossible to tell what programs actually do.
I am hoping at some point in the future I will be able to develop for the android platform. (maybe make a few pennies off of it XD).
