Nandroid restores

Forgive me if this is in the wrong area. I am not new to Android / rooting, but new to posting in forums.

When a nandroid backup is restored, will it reformat the phone to the file system that was used in the original backup?

Say you take a stock backup of a phone using rfs. Then you format it to use ext4 and install a custom rom. In order to restore that stock backup, would you first have to reformat to rfs, or would the nandroid restore automatically reformat?
