I updated to Navigator on my Samsung Galaxy Ring and I don't seem to have the walking ability while I have driving, bicycle, etc. I may have seen it on the laptop navigator though. But I'm sure I accidentally have seen walking on my phone.
I found the answer in a google mobile help page. One must press the blue button and you get icons for walking, riding, etc. BUT... the walking app needs a destination, like a car. so what if I just want to walk with know specific destination, i.e. just for exercise. I guess that's not possible?
How can a navigation app work without a destination?
If you just want to walk around and check where you are occasionally then just use Maps (or one of many other mapping apps) without starting the navigation and it will show you where you are and the area around you. But navigation means guiding you to somewhere, so by definition that needs a destination.
Download runkeeper from the play store.
It will track your walk/run/biking. It will save your routes and times,it will give you splits and you can set goals to try and reach. It works well with Google maps.
