Help Need a contacts app as my Moto G is forgetting saved contacts

Hi I have a really bizarre issue on Moto G 2nd gen whereby if I save a number it deletes it from my address book once I've locked the screen. I am using the stock address book, and I havent installed any apps that would interfere.

For example I received a text message off my brother's new tel no, so it displayed 11 digits. I then added this number to my address book and gave it the name Dave. It saved in address book and I could text him back and ring etc and search for him in the address book and it would display as Dave. In my message inbox the name had been added so it could be seen as a text received from Dave. Later, when I came back to the phone, the contact does not appear in my contacts list, and the text message sender details had reverted back to 11 digits.

(In case its relevant; Contacts are being saved to phone and Google. They are not being saved to SIM. The phone is approx 18 months old and I've been able to add numbers throughout this time and they've saved forever. It is only new numbers I add that quickly delete themselves. There are around 50 saved numbers on there and 6gb storage space left. I have also tried deleting a number hoping this will free up 1 space for me to add a number but it doesnt.)

Whilst I troubleshoot this issue, can anybody recommend an app that will simply replace the on board contacts app and allow me to input numbers in to it. I've installed a few and its getting very frustrating as these apps are just using my existing contacts list and merely adding features like Caller ID and Block Caller etc, which is not what I'm looking for!

The trouble is that I'm pretty sure that's all an alternative contacts app is. If they don't use the system contacts database then other apps (phone, sms, email) won't be able to use any contacts they save.

What happens if you turn off syncing of contacts? If that makes a difference it will give a clue as to where the problem is, if not why.

Just to be sure, your contacts app is set to display all contacts (all types/groups)? Though I don't think that would affect what the message app shows, so I doubt it's relevant.

Thank you for your response. I dont know how to turn off sync contacts, how do I do this.

I'm also not sure if the contacts app is set to display all contacts etc. These things arent made clear on phone setup. Typical android.

If you look in the system settings, accounts and sync and select the Google account you should find a check box for contact syncing. Don't forget to turn it on again once you know the result of the test.

The contacts app is something that varies between phones, but of you select the tab that views all contacts you'll find the setting there, either in the app settings or in my phone's case the word "phonebook" (label of that view) is a pull down menu (little triangle is the clue).

Ive found something of a workaround by logging on to gmail on my PC and creating several 'blank' contacts in my gmail address book. My phone auto syncs with gmail address book so these new contacts have now added to my phone's contacts list. Now when I want to add somebody's number I can edit one of the blank contacts I've made and therefore it should save and not delete itself
