It seems I may have a problem when I actually receive my new S3 from Verizon.Researching the required file transfer program Kies,I see it requires you have at least a dual core processor and 1 gig of FREE ram at minimum on your home PC to run.I have a rather old PC with a single core P4 2.8 processor and 1 gig of ram is all it even has installed!
My old phone is first gen. droid I have been looking to replace for some time. One very nice feature is its ability to use it as a USB mass storage device and drop any kind of file on it as if it were a thumbdrive.Even so,I am willing to accept the media and picture only capability of the file transfer program required for the S3.I rarely cart around other types of files and, after all,the phone has so much more to offer.
However, due to the hardware limitations of my home PC,it would seem I would be stuck with NO WAY to transfer even media and pictures to and from my phone if I get an S3.One reason many prefer Android over IOS is its flexibility. In light of this, why would Samsung choose to lock us into a specific method to do things similar to the way Apple does with its Itunes? This is Android. At least Sammy could have given us a Kies,no Kies option.
A quick internet search doesn't turn up a Kies workaround without rooting the phone to enable simple USB file transfer with a third party program. This idea kind of scares me.I'd rather be able to receive system updates without the worry of functional problems and/or compatibility issues related to tinkering with things in an unconventional way. After all, first and foremost I MUST have a reliable phone!Might a program to do this without rooting be available in the marketplace at some point in the future or is it just technically not possible?
It has occurred to me that I could pull the SD card from the phone to load it with files some other way.Would the S3 recognize and be able to access the files if I did this?
What should I do?Should I cancel my pre order or go ahead with this? Will Kies still work on my ancient PC if sluggishly?Should I root the phone anyway and hope for the best?Have I missed a "rootless" option or an easy fix from the marketplace?Would loading the SD card outside of the phone solve things?I have a Pebble blue 32 on pre order and have to make a decision. Thanks in advance.
