need help, prepaid firmware upgrade + root

synagen

Lurker
Phone:samsung galaxy s2
Model: sgh~s959g
Android ver: 2.3.6
Baseband:S959GUDLG1
kernel:2.6.35.7
Build: gingerbread.UDLG1
carrier: straittalk through AT&T, prepaid

So what I want to do is update my firmware, sounds easy but not so for me. See i have no internet access besides my phone so everything i need to get this done has to be on my phone or used offline from my computer, so no kies or any comp app that needs internet. also my auto update tell me there is no update available which I assume is either because of my carrier or simply no wifi. In system mode it has the option to upgrade from sd card, so i'd like to hope there's a place I can get the files i'd need for the firmware and then use the upgrade from sd option. I'd also like to get the phone rooted but can't find anything on my model of phone. Any help would be appreciated

Is this phone the st branded s2? If it is your in no luck, unfortunately. I went down that road a while back, and the only root method for it is the at&t version for the galaxy skyrocket.. same phone, but at that time didn't have a recovery available for it either. And you can't update the firmware with kies software as st has it hidden or locked out.

yes unfortunately it is st branded, poking through my system files on the phone (read only) the phone lists the base model as GT-i900, could it be possible to root it as that and manually update?

success! it can be done. xda dev forum had a useful thread on it. mine is now rooted with 4.2 os and everything is functional

forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1982571

this has all the links and info I used to root my sgh s959g.

in short, using the links and files from xda, I downloaded Odin and the clockworks mod. used Odin to install clockworks, then used the clockworks install zip from SD feature to update with cyanogenMod nightly and gapps 4.2.2. and the stock modem zip or you lose data.
these updated my system to jb.

note: only odd thing about this is, since these files were originally intended for the i777 it will change the phones description to i777 from s959g. to me this is trivial and it hasn't caused any issues so i left it alone but I suppose you could go change it back in the root desc files if u felt the need

I didn't think that was possible, you've basically turned your phone into the skyrocket. You have everything working, bt, data, mms, etc?

I knew this was to good to be True....

You can only successfully run Android 4.1.2 with sms, mms, wifi, bt, etc. all working on Straight Talk because at the moment that is the highest version of Android offered on their phones. However, as you mentioned, you can use I777 files, but I have not had much success with anything higher than 4.1.2. I suspect, though, that if you flash CM 10.1.3 RC2, gapps, factory/data wipe, then flash stock I777 modem back to the phone you will have all data & network connections again.

I attached an .apk file that you can place on your external SDcard & install to your phone to root it without a computer with internet. Note: in order to install .apk file you must have "allow unknown sources" checked in Settings> Security> Device Administration

I hope this helps! I will test the CM10.1.3 RC2 with stock modem & let you know if it works.

Awesome! You should post how you achieved this as others would probably be grateful.:D

How to successfully port Android 4.2.2 to S959G Straight Talk:

This method will port Android 4.2.2 to your Straight Talk S959G using AT&T I777 files. All data & network features tested & fully operational. i.e. GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, Mobile calling, both cameras, SMS & MMS.

Files you will need:

Odin v1.85:

NOTE: copy any applicable .zip files to your phones SDCard and BACKUP your current rom before starting this process! I CANNOT stress BACKUP enough.

Now the install

You must first downgrade to STOCK Android 2.3.4 in order for this install to work as intended, so...

Odin Flash:
1. Unzip Odin v1.85 & load the ATTGalaxyS2Unroot.tar file into PDA. Make sure Auto Reboot & F.Reset Time are the ONLY things checked & click start.

2. When the phone reboots disconnect from the computer. Skip the setup wizard because you're going to "factory data reset" from the settings menu anyway.

3. Settings> backup & reset> factory data reset. Once phone FULLY reboots for the first time you can reboot into stock recovery by holding the vol up, vol down, & power keys at the same time until you see the stock recovery screen.

4. Select Apply sdcard: update.zip. This will ROOT & install CWM recovery. Reboot system.

5. Reboot into CWM Recovery using the same key combo as earlier.

6. Install zip from sdcard> choose zip from sdcard> select ROM zip file & install.

7. Install zip from sdcard> choose zip from last install> select gapps zip file & install. Wipe data/factory reset. (to get a clean install) Reboot system.

Complete setup wizard & UR DONE! :five:

Yvw, Slug. I'm a noob myself at this whole rooting & flashing stuff, so I have been simply working by trial & error & it took me awhile to figure out exactly how I had achieved this outcome. (not a smart idea if you don't have a backup phone in case you hard brick) Fortunately, I have a backup, so I thought I'd take a crack at the daunting task of rooting & upgrading past 4.1.2 on a Straight Talk device. Like I said, trial & error. The working APN settings were courtesy of Slimroms.net & were built into their Vibrant 4.1.2 SlimBean. Glad you were able to make this work too & thanks for the kudos.
