need help understanding theme work

Hello and thanks to all who participate here. I currently use a samsung captivate with froyo. I have been reading the forums but still have some lingering questions.
1. Does your phone need to be rooted to apply a theme. I have read that some themes are made for specific roms.
2. Do I have to stick with themes only for the captivate? Or can I use any made for froyo?
I read the theme walkthrough but did not see answers to these questions.
